I moved to Grants Pass in 1980. I was born in 1954, in Louisville, Kentucky. At the age of nine my family moved from Atlanta to Cincinnati where I remained until 1980 when I moved to Southern Oregon. My studies include: Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, 1976 BFA, Mitch Kaufman-Katz, 1978-79, and Pat Enos 1993-96, Rogue Community College. Artists of influence include Kokoschka, Schiele, Picasso, and Rauschenburg. My work has appeared on the cover Art Calendar and in various gallery publications, and has been exhibited nationally. My recent work explores the figure.  I use shape, color, and gesture, to design and manipulate the space.  I experiment with process, format and recognizing the unexpected to develop these visual comments. The paintings are developed through layering. I utilized collage, acrylic, charcoal, pastel, gold leaf, and various acrylic mediums, building thickness in the process, intermittently I sand or scratch into the surface to reveal clues of an earlier state.  Through this manipulation the layers begin to merge and flow into the other.  The paintings develop a deep encaustic like surface. My figures develop much the same as a person’s character. I attempt to integrate my figures into the world around them using this technique, translucency and gold leaf, hoping to express immersion and the value of being. I now, live and work 12 miles north of Rogue River, Oregon.

I love you work. Much of mine in focused in the figure.  By reading what you wrote about yourself and the process of creating your work, it gave me inspiration.  You mention through that process of layers and change in meduim the charater develops. I understand that completely. When i start to create a piece, i just relax and let it develop as it may. i am almost surprised to see what it looks like in the end. I am not sure if that is the "correct" way to do things but i am still learning.  TO see your beautiful expressive peices, i really want to branch out in search of other materails to give my work some more dimention. Thank you for sharing your art. christie

I saw your work today in the Main Gallery and immediately thought of Egon Schiele. I love how expressive your figure work is. Your bold use of color and contrast are quite striking. I especially like your use of color in "Past Goodbye" - the way the red/orange of the hair is complimented by the blue in the background. I think that one is my favorite in your gallery, so far... Happy Painting,   -Don

thank you so much for your comment on my digital work. they are digitally layered in photoshop from found and altered images. i have TONS of them b/c they are super addictive and can be done on the laptop at 2 in the morning....have pulled many all-nighters. i output them on paper using archival inks and mount them on small (usu 6"x8" or 8" x 8") canvases. i paint the sides black. they are great on their own or grouped. a few galleries have shown interest and i think i will be showing them in downtown LA in the near future. in the meantime, if you are interested in hanging something in your home, i'd be happy to talk about it! send me a message. i think your work is beautiful too.

cheers....

very beautiful work, i can tell that this format does not do your work justice - I would love to see this in person!  I look forward to visiting your website!

A very interesting gallery. I like the strong graphical backgrounds. I guess I need to reasearch some of the names I'm reading on your page. Thanks!

I like your use of space.  And I can definitely see the influences of Kokoschka, and schiele in your work.  I believe Klimt used gold leafing in his works as well.  I mostly felt that your figures,  the line work and some of the colors you work with remind me of works by Klimt.
