I moved to Grants Pass in 1980. I was born in 1954, in Louisville, Kentucky. At the age of nine my family moved from Atlanta to Cincinnati where I remained until 1980 when I moved to Southern Oregon. My studies include: Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, 1976 BFA, Mitch Kaufman-Katz, 1978-79, and Pat Enos 1993-96, Rogue Community College. Artists of influence include Kokoschka, Schiele, Picasso, and Rauschenburg. My work has appeared on the cover Art Calendar and in various gallery publications, and has been exhibited nationally. My recent work explores the figure. I use shape, color, and gesture, to design and manipulate the space. I experiment with process, format and recognizing the unexpected to develop these visual comments. The paintings are developed through layering. I utilized collage, acrylic, charcoal, pastel, gold leaf, and various acrylic mediums, building thickness in the process, intermittently I sand or scratch into the surface to reveal clues of an earlier state. Through this manipulation the layers begin to merge and flow into the other. The paintings develop a deep encaustic like surface. My figures develop much the same as a person’s character. I attempt to integrate my figures into the world around them using this technique, translucency and gold leaf, hoping to express immersion and the value of being. I now, live and work 12 miles north of Rogue River, Oregon. |
