In My Studio May 2008
DATE: 05/07/2008 22:17:37 / MOOD: other

I am sitting here, at the hospital, waiting for my daughter to finish her surgery, a short procedure of taking her ear tubes out, following two year of not being able to swim of fear of getting liquids to her ears. So, even though it is the simplest procedure, and it will be over in no time, sighing up all these forms resides me of the fragility of our lives. How important health is. How much we do not appreciate our healthy organs and destroying our health with stress, aimless fears, and endless diets.

Anyways, the pictures you see here in an update from my studio. These are two canvases of 48"x60" each. It is not a new technique for me. I have been using it in my painting on and off in varies ways so far. It takes me back to my childhood when I used to scribble with black ink pen on white paper. In this technique, though, I learned as an adult that when I add colors as you can see in the second picture, I have to cover all the white areas before I can start going deep into the images and consider the whole composition. So what you see in this picture is the covering of the white areas. It is only the first layers though. It will change along the way.

So enjoy.

Art for the young
DATE: 05/07/2008 21:31:26 / MOOD: other

April 21, 2008 Dear Mrs. Zahavy-Mittelman, I am a youth growing up in the country. I yearn for a refreshing niche for myself. I go to a junior high called South Cache and I am in the ninth grade. I looked around on the internet for ‘abstract artists’, your name was among others with a sample of your art. Yours was the first I clicked on. The picture, I believe, was from your scream series; "My Scream 4". It stirred up some memories of my own and I was drawn in, immediately curious. Now, I will tell you something that happens daily but is not very pleasant. Because you declared to the world your personal story of your car crash I feel that you should hear back from someone who has also been in a car crash. For those were the memories your painting conjured from the depths of my mind, pushed to a part in my brain that remembers every little detail, every desperate scream but let’s no one on the outside hear. You’ve inspired me to let the outsiders hear me through my own painting. Make them feel what I feel, know what I know. The pure desperation, terror and maybe even hope I feel when I look at your paintings is a relief. I also am interested in your painting, "The Mystery of The Pink Rose". It reminds me of a book being read all at once on a canvas. A whole story is laid before the eyes of your audience; to soak it in, to relish every moment. One of those stories that leaves you hanging at the end with no hope of a sequel. The author allowing the reader to use his/her imagination; letting it flow to a rhythm that would usually belong to a young child; with a mind that’s uncontaminated, 'un-influenced'. Your art makes me see things in a fresh perspective, an 'un-influenced' mind. Thank you so much for reading this letter, taking time away from your schedule to read the thoughts of a stranger. I hope to be able to see your work in person at an art gallery someday. Thank you again, Mrs. Sincerely, Caroline H. Ramsey Mr. Petersen’s art class 10 South 480 West Hyrum, Utah 84319

Abstract Expressionism in collage and colored Pencils
DATE: 02/24/2008 22:52:14 / MOOD: other

Hi everyone,

So, writing every day does not happen, and I will not start with the excuses, because the list might be endless.

A friend of mine was clearing up her basement, and gave me an old Mandalas calendar she did not even open. So my current project is collages made out of these Mandalas combined with colored pencils. It is fascinating what comes out from this combination. I obligated myself to finish all 12 (one for each Mndala of that calendar,) by April. So stay tune. I will do my best to add some of the images during that process.

Have great day/night where ever you are.

Abstract Expressionism
DATE: 01/23/2008 17:30:22 / MOOD: other

It is already afternoon my time and it feels like I did not even start my day.

I am an abstract expressionist. That means in my terms that I love expressing my feelings and thoughts abstractively through the canvas. I love the colors, and the lines that dictate my work. The work does not ask me, It is formed into the canvas.

Here are some sites that might give you some clarity on the subject.

If you want to relate to the subject of art in general, or to abstract expressionism, please write to me.

Next art process?
DATE: 01/21/2008 17:32:33 / MOOD: other

Hi everyone,

I decided to try and write something almost every day. It can be short or long. Mostly about art, my art or art of others.

So today’s topic is the fear of starting new phases in the art process. I recently finished the series “My scream,” and as usual painting but feel like I am stepping on the same place, like not knowing where to go next in my process. I think I am afraid of trusting the process.

Usually once in the studio, the artwork dictates. I use the winter and the cold weather as an excuse, and I am writing a novel, so it is not that the creativity process is stopped. Maybe I need to write to get to the next studio part. If you have any comments, similar experiences, write to me.

My Scream 4

Yael Zahavy-Mittelman, My Scream 4, oil and collage on canvas, 48" X 48"
YaelsArt.com Art Gallery 2007

Gallery 2007 The year 2007 has been very dramatic for me.  On one hand, a newborn in the house, and on the other hand, a car accident that involved my newborn and me.

Following the accident, I felt the need to shout.  I found refuge in my artwork.  With a digital camera, I photographed myself and used the images to draw my face screaming.  The initial images that emerged on the canvases reminded me of Edvard Munch's, "The Scream."  It was the first time I had allowed myself to exhibit such emotion.

“My Scream" started to evolve.  Image after image brought out different sides of me onto the canvas.  The large canvases, once completed, formed a series of seven mixed-media paintings (collage pieces on oil).   I used my camera to capture different parts of the paintings and formed new collages based on each of the large paintings.

In yaelsart.com Gallery 2007, each index page will include small images of a big painting and the collages based on it (please click on the small images to view enlarged pictures).

This series is an important milestone in my art process.  It allowed me to express something that was deep within me, waiting to emerge for a long time.  The pain, the sorrow, as well as the maturity and acceptance of life from a growing place, makes up a large part of who I am today.  This is conveyed in these new paintings and collages. My new series allowed me to bring to you, the viewer, a clearer reality as I see it.  It also enabled me to let go of the trauma and the experience of the car accident, the impetus for this series.

Thank you for your time and support,
Yael Zahavy-Mittelman
