Art Calendar does listen
DATE: 04/29/2008 10:02:40 / MOOD: happy

I want to thank Art Calendar for hearing the plea to put encaustic in the lineup. It makes my heart glad. It is a misunderstood medium. I try not to let the iron imprint show in my work BUT sometimes it does have its advantages. I posted a new encaustic piece that I have "twitterpated". Just give it a different look.

Just one woman's fiew
DATE: 04/12/2008 13:37:02 / MOOD: other

Is it just me or are there other women out there that are really tried of seeing the female form painted, drawnand sketched. Look I am not a prude. BUT the only ones that are exploring the female form is male artists. Women already know what we look like. And have you noticed there just aren't that many woman artists painting, drawing and sketching the male form.

Keep it light people it was just an observation.

A question?????
DATE: 04/10/2008 13:34:13 / MOOD: full of life

I would like to hear your views on what the difference is between a juried show and a judged show. It was a question put to me today by a fellow artist. I gave her my version, now I would like to hear yours.

to me a juried show is where you apply to enter a show and your artwork is juried by a panel or committee.

A judged show is judged by a judge. In these shows you win money of a ribbon.

Shows can be both juried and judged. Juried to enter and judged to win.

How close am I.

"you're fired"
DATE: 03/26/2008 09:50:05 / MOOD: disappointed

Okay here I go! I did a show this last weekend that I had hyped myself up for. BUT it was a real downer. IF I sold $50 that day  in art I would consider that good. Now don't get me wrong, I had a lot of compliments on how interesting, beautiful and lovely my work was ...... but I dont think the buying public gets my work.   That's the conclusion my daughters and I came to. Encaustic is not a medium that the midwest understands. They get watercolors, oils and acrylics but NOT encaustic.  My second daughter put it right out there.....they are not sophisticated enough to understand this art form. So in essence I would be fired. THey both told me I am ahead of my time. Some artists don't get my form of encaustic, so how am I expecting the general public to get it.

Now before everyone jumps down my throat for not being socially correct, it was a statement that was made in truth. My work does not fit in their catagory of art that matches the couch or drapes. I had several women come by, take a look and proudly announce they were re-decorating and would keep me in mind. I AM NOT WALMART.

I am curious, how do other ARTISTS buy art. When I purchase a piece of artwork I don't care if it "matches" anything in my home. I buy it because it "talks" to me and evokes an emotion that can not be denied.

The NEW Art Calendar
DATE: 03/12/2008 07:30:31 / MOOD: happy

Has anyone taken a look back at their older issues of Art Calendar. I drug out some from 2005. OH WHAT A CHANGE! Those older issues were plain text articles, with no visual inserts. There was no attention getting pics with the articles. Now what gets my eye is the banner headlines with meaningful pics attached to the articles. It was eye-opening. Take a few and go back and compare.I think you will be pleasantly surprised.  I like the new format.

There's also more advertising. But, the advertising is not wasted space. It is definetly is aimed at us artitists. AND some of it is actually helpful. LOL

Inspiration
DATE: 03/09/2008 14:38:16 / MOOD: full of life

As an encaustic artist I am always looking for new ways to use the wax to create new pieces. When looking at other artists works I find myself getting excited with the abstract that uses other media and objects in their work.

I play at making quilts. I really love the batik fabrics. They remind me of my encaustic. So I think I am going to do a series of pieces that incorporate both. I will post them when I finish and I will keep you informed as to how the public responds at the art shows I have coming up.

I had reached a deadend, maybe impass would be a better word, as to new ways I could create with encaustic. So I want to thank the artists here for the inspiration you have given me to try new and different ways of creating art.

The work of the artists here is exceptional. Its wonderful to see how wide the abilities are when we say the work "art". I am amazed at how many people think they don't have an "artistic bone in there body". I truly belive its because they are afraid to try. Its like anything else, the more you do the better you get.

adapting to the economics of the art world
DATE: 02/21/2008 12:12:48 / MOOD: other

I belong to an art league that is on the ferge of disappearing if we don't change our format on how we market ourselves. Thank God, because we now have new ideas coming forth from new members. However, we need to convince our local leaders that we are a viable force in the community. So I will keep my fellow artists here up to date and maybe you could send helpful hints on how to make this happen for us.

It is difficult to believe that this art  league has been around since 1967 and very few of the residents of the town don't even know it exists.
