My youngest daughter, Kristina, hated this painting when she first saw it. Unfortunatley for her it lived for quite a while right where she had to see it every day when she was at the table. Much to her amazement she grew to love it, and it is now her very favorite mOM painting.

I started oil painting when I was a senior in high school. Some of my pictures were getting so freaky it scared me to look at them. I wanted to stay away from too much of 'that'. This painting was turning into 'that'. When my professor, Tom Nakashima, was discussing 'No Man's Land' with me, I told him, "I just didn't want to get into the nightmare world." "You're already there," he said.

I love the gleam in this guy's eye, though I need to come up with a more profound title. My dear friend and fellow artist, Ilona Adams, loved to stop in at the studio and watch my progression on this piece. She had to have it. Where would I be without the love, support and encouragement of friends, family and teachers? Very much less a person.

In a history book about Vikings, I came across what was called a 'gripping beast'. It was used as decoration, though its meaning was unsure. I had to paint it. A couple of the female students saw me working and said, "Oh, its so nice to see you painting with happy colors for a change." I told that to my friend, Dr. Raymond Whiting, and he said, "They just don't get it, do they?"

I was looking at a photo of a young boy and his father when I started this painting. When I was almost done with it I thought, 'good heavens- that's the relationship of me and my husband!' What would Freud have to say?

Quail, 16" x 20"

I usually am pretty clueless about where I am going with a painting. I just start out with some lines and see where it takes me from there. So often the paintings end up being a sort of self-portrait, more authentic than a realistic photo could ever be. This one captures the feelings of anxiety, despair, grief, and down out fear that I had to deal with right after the divorce, trying to figure out where I was going to live, what I was going to do, how to survive. I like the play on the word 'Quail', meaning the bird, which I see a couple of them in the painting, and to shake with fright.
