Alaskan Bear fishing

01/29/2008 13:06:02 / happy

Hello everyone, I finally got back on a piece I had put aside for a while now.  I'm doing an Alaskan Brown Bear pulling a salmon out of the river.  I started this piece some time back and got sidetracked.  It seems like when I start something I really want to do it always gets shelved by something I feel more compelled to do.  I don't argue with it, I just roll with the punches.  I like to think there are certain things that I have to do because they need to be born.  This piece was put on hold for about three years and the other day I finally got back to it.  All I had created before last week was the river bank.  I have a weeks worth of work now in the bear.  I figured I might as well document the progress of this piece and maybe it would keep me a bit more focused on the completion.  So, please take a look at the sculpture and feel free to comment.  If you have any suggestions along the way please feel free to say so.

Thanks,

Steve

I finished the clay today.  I went back and put a little bit different texture on for the fur.  It's a bit of a new technique but I really am happy with it and I can see myself using it on more of my pieces.  I guess that's how we grow as artists.  Let me know what you think of it.  There are more views of the finished clay on my website under works in progress at http://www.giftedhandssculpting.com

Thanks,

Steve

Today I detailed one of the paws and added some texture to the body.  I will have to wait till the clay is a bit drier and go back over it with a sponge to remove the little clay balls.  I also detailed the salmon a bit more today.  I'm hoping to have the clay finished by Friday and go to mold next week.  Here are a few more progress shots, I hope you enjoy.

Yesterday was spent trying to detail the mouth with tongue and teeth and giving the salmon a bit more definition.  Today I will spend on some of the paws and claws as well as some more detailing of the salmon.  Here is yesterdays progress.

Now that I have the piece bulked out I can start detailing it a bit.  This is the part of the process that takes the longest but it is also the funnest part.

Here I have most of the eyes done and have started on the salmon that will be in his mouth.

The next step is to start packing the clay on to the armature.

Next I built an armature out of wire and filled it with newspaper.
