Father and Son Promenade

This is the first painting documenting my European excursion. This is my host and his son leading us through Cologne (Koln), Germany on a wet, cold, windy Sunday afternoon in October. We were headed for the Dom (cathedral). The son, an architect specializing in restoring old buildings, had graciously agreed to give us a personal tour and to fill us in on the stained glass window saga. In this particular church, all the windows were removed and stowed for safe keeping during WWII. They are still in the process of reinstalling them. It is an arduous and expensive process. Even after 60 years, only about half have been reinstalled. It just shows that the cost of war is infinite. A smaller church did not remove it’s windows and many of them were destroyed. They are being replaced with modern versions that are causing a great deal of controversy.
