Self Portrait Monotype

04/26/2008 23:23:14 / bored

n instructor once told me that every artist should do a self-portrait at least every five years. Well it had been about 10 years between my last and this one. I really didn't know how to do this with a press but was determined. I used two plates coated with Akua inks. The second had an outline of the face in crayon. Fortunately the crayon transferred which allowed me to see the features. Then I used a stylus, swabs, and a brush to add and remove ink until I was satisfied with the image. The best part of a self portrait is knowing that you never have to age any more than you want. I was able to smooth out wrinkles and hide the spots. It is closer to what I want to see in the mirror rather than how I feel.

Joe, Thanks for taking the time to look.  Maybe the self portrait advise is a FL thing.  I didn't know FSU had a campus in Boca.  libby

YOUR WORK IS TERRIFIC! I LOVE THE COLOR COMBINATION YOU CAME UP WITH FOR YOUR FINAL PRINT.  I ALSO HEARD THE SAME ADIVSE FROM MY PAINTNG INSTRUCTION WHEN ATTENDING FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY IN BOCA RATON, FL. IT IS SO TRUE. I'M AFRAID I HAVE BEEN REMISE IN TAKING THAT ADVISE, BUT IT DEFINATELY IS WORTH THE TIME. A SELF PORTRAIT SAYS A LOT ABOUT THE ARTIST AND THE SUBJECT. SO ONE PRINT PROVIDES A LOT OF INFORMATION. BTW - YOU DON'T LOOK BORED. I SEE A SMILE IN YOUR PORTRAIT THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOUR TRUE FEELINGS AT THE TIME.

THANX FOR SHARING YOUR WORK.

BEST TO YOU,

 JOE
