PLEASE- NO SHOCK ART!

This is a blog that concerns the somewhat style of shock art.  I have had alot of people say that my art is shock art , which is not even close (believe me, if I wanted to shock people, I could paint some gruesome subjects!) I chose surrealism and dealing with social and political issues sometimes makes it that I have to incorporate harsh and not so pleasent subjects in my work.  An artist needs to paint  a style he or she feels good about, but not paint just to freak people out.  Good art is suppose to get a reaction from the audience, good or bad, but not created just to shock or disturb people.  I enjoy almost all styles of art and can tell if an artist is true to their style.  There are some styles that I feel are not considered art, but thats my opinion and personal preference. Paint what you feel and enjoy and if shock art makes you happy, then go ahead and waste your time, because real art patrons can see right through it.

I agree, art should evoke something from the viewer. Your art is definitely not shock art. I love it. Dali-esque and thought provoking! I like that you make statements with your art, without doing it for shock value. (My husband and I run our own special effects makeup business, so I know shock when I see it. LOL)

As in your case; I have found several artists here at scuttlebutt that employ some what "electrifying" images to make a point. The use of blatant images in a painting to convey a point of view or feeling are nowhere near what I would call shock art.

Any time you create a piece with a social, political or religious message it will probably be labeled "shock art". People assume that if you choose to touch those hyper sensitive subjects you're just trying to get a rise out of someone. Unfortunately, most people today are way to judgmental.

In the case of what Lynmac mentioned below, I'm sure the artist she referred to made the conscious effort to state that she used "actual menstrual blood" in the artwork. That to me would be a deliberate attempt to shock people, instead of just using it and not mention it. (what happened? she didn't have access to red paint and couldn't wait a single day longer to finish her painting?...)

I'm with you with blatant shock. There are subtle ways of getting messages across. Let the audience think ! I was told of a girl who collected menstrual blood to use in her paintings. That's gross !!!
