Boundless Gallery

03/10/2008 13:01:10 / disappointed

Did anyone check out Boundless Gallery? I am amazed that people are selling such large paintings for so cheap and then shipping them for $15. They also have to pay a commission. It doesn't compute. I'd like to hear what others think.

Please join our marketing group (in the "groups" section under money and investing.) We discuss all types of marketing ideas. Look at my contribution on Daily Painters. It's a great way to get "out there".

I also went to this site also. I'm glad to read your reactions, because I, too, wondered whether Art Calendar was promoting and advocating the site, or merely advertising it.  The range of quality of work is huge, the prices are everywhere, and the site is very large.  Do you think this might be a good site for exposure if you don't already have a market? (like me)  Everyone keeps telling me that I have to get my work "out there". What are the best ways to be out there? How do you know if a site like this is a good marketing tool?

I looked at the site and for the most part I agree... the work is formulaic as another person mentioned.  And yes it reminds me of a place where artists go to clear out their studio......however if an artist is trying to sell their work at a specific price and then discount some work at a site like this one they could destroy their market.  My comment is.....be careful.

This brings up a question: Should we assume that advertisers like Boundless are endorsed by Art Scuttlebutt/Art Calendar?  If they are simply sponsors, wouldn't they have space on the site like Dick Blick and not fill our in-boxes?   If they are not endorsed by Scuttlebutt,  I'm not sure I like the idea that they apparently have my e-mail.  It's obviously a very effective means of marketing for them because I did check out their site and it has generated a blog, but I think it's a slippery slope for members as far as spam potential.

The art they list tends to be formulaic in nature. An artist who has identified a sales vein  and can run up a large number of these quickly with little effort. The maximum commission they pay is 10%  plus a yearly fee  from $60 to $240 at the highest pay in there is no commission fee.   For the artist who wants to clear the decks for the next seasons work this could be a good venue. An artist with consistent sales could expect to make a nice bit of money from this. On the other hand an Artist with spotty sales could end up out of pocket. Not all venues favor all artists.
