EBAY!

02/18/2008 16:58:58 / in love

I'm on Ebay selling art for the first time. I put four on and sold three (Okay, for pennies..BUT..) Anyway, my question is this: should I sell under my name or under a fake name? Has anyone read Jack White's articles? I love that guy. But, I'm confused: should I do as he does and sell under a fictitional name or should I sell under my name? Privately, I sell art at higher prices than I start on ebay. I wouldn't want to disappoint my customers.

What do you do?

Alison

Two issues ago Jack White wrote an article that got me going on selling on Ebay. He sold over $4000 in one month. He gives great tips on developing a following. He said to start cheap and work your prices up. He also said don't try to "unload" paintings that you're not pleased with because they won't sell. You should read the article, it's really good. I did a search on "self Representing Artist" catagory to see what was working for other artists. I increased my prices the last entry but used a psuedomim. Maybe next time I'll use my real name but have my prices reflect my usual prices.

I just opened an ebay account less than a month ago, but I haven't sold anything. I was trying to auction off some matted reproductions, but I think I will change my stratagy a little bit.

Anyways I wish you luck.

Hi I was wondering about this myself-- it seems a lot of the prices on eBay are very low- will artists be able to get their true value on eBay? People on eBay seems to be always looking for cheap prices--

Richard, Thank you. Your feedback makes my day. I understand your point.

Alison:  Your work is much too good to be selling for pennies (even allowing for exageration).  Your work should be priced consistent with its high quality.

Thanks Rodger. I like your thoughts on the matter. I appreciate your time to email me. In fact, the works on ebay are mostly small works. Take care.

I would break out a line of works that are for E-bay separate from what you are selling live. That way if your live customers discover your E-bay work and think they were over charged you can explain that the series on E-bay is separate from what you market in person. As for using a different name, you are entitled to 'do business' under any name you choose. This will also help to distinguish your E-bay line from your other works.

Good for you that you are on Ebay.. I have thought about it but have done nothing about it to date (I even listed a poll asking about it on this website that you may want to check out). I definitely think you should use a different seller name than your actual name because of the reason you already acknowledged - you have customers that you dont want to disappoint. My question for you is do you think selling art on ebay is worth the time and effort involved in starting to closing the sale? Is it worth the 'pennies' you said you sold your art for? just wondering because I have the same concerns you do.

Robin

p.s I did not read Jack White's article about ebay.
