commissions

07/11/2008 07:34:09 / happy

I've painted everything for people: boats, trucks, grandchildren, dogs, cats, flowers, driveways, gardens, homes, dead relatives, wedding bouquets, etc. I love doing commissions because it pleases people so very much to see their beloved subject translated into a painting and because it's a sold painting from the get-go.

I make an arrangement with my clients that they have to be available to critique my painting within 24 hours of it's completion so I can change anything that they want. This has worked well for me so far... Alison

I agree - commission are a "sure" thing, but not necessarily. Trying to meet the client's expectations and remain true to my style is not always easy.

One artist I know collects 50% up front, but if the client isn't happy with the finished product, she refunds the money WHEN the piece if sold. I think that's probably fair.

I agree - seeing a customer thrilled about their personalized painting is the best reward (the money is nice too). At the same time, the pressure to deliver something that exceeds their expectations can be excruciating. I prefer to do abstract commissions because if they aren't happy with it, I can always sell it to someone else (luckily I've never had a commissioned piece rejected). Plus I like having the freedom to just let the paint fly and see what happens.
