Women's Art/Men's Art

04/20/2008 17:09:38 / in love

As I look at art the works that I am attracted to usually turn out to be done by women. My own work is partially inspired by Eva Hessa and Louise Bougeouis. What qualities do people think give art a male or female sensibility ?

No doubt there are subtle differences in the sensibilities of men and women.  Generalizations smack of sexism, though, and scare me.  I like Eva Hesse too.  It is hard to look at art neutrally since it is so male-centric.  In my area, most of the painters I know are women.  I guess the man-painters all live elsewhere?

Oh, gee, maybe that's why I chose to call myself "sebland" instead of Shirley Bland. I want to be thought of as a strong painter - and in the past, women were not taken seriously. I'm not sure that is true today. Thanks for making me think about this some more!
