Saving Coney Island!

05/08/2008 17:46:01 / angry

Hi All!

I just added some new photos to my gallery...they were taken on the "front lines" of the 25th Annual Mermaid Parade at Coney Island, NY last summer.  As some of you know, Big Corp. is buying up Coney Island and destroying much of this historical boardwalk and replacing it with condos, coffee and, well, crap!

There's no place like Coney, which still has an old-school Sideshow (the owner luckily bought the old building so THAT will remain safe...for now).  Coney Island attracts people from all walks of life and the parade brings out the most creative, wild and outrageous of them all (it's awesome!).

Thses photos (more to come this summer) show the fun, unique qualities of this event and how people are peacefully and creatively protesting the impending demise of much of this landmark.

Late this summer (2008) I plan to have an exhibit with a fellow photographer-friend in Asbury Park, NJ (another historical shore town that was partially destroyed but is making a big comeback!) displaying more of these photographs.

Well, now I'm preparing to go to Budapest to shoot a LOT of film (yes, I STILL love film!!) and digital pics, too...and hopefully get inspired for more paintings!

Thanks for reading!

~Lauren

Hi Lauren, loved your Coney Island pictures.  I am a native New Yorker and grew up going to Coney Island with my family by subway...we didn't have a car.  It was at Coney that I fell in love with the ocean and promised myself I would someday have a place by the water....my paintings brought me that dream.  In 1970 I had a show and bought myself an apartment in Spain on the Mediterranean.  Coney Island will always be a special place for me. diane leon
