Quitet Evening

01/26/2008 18:55:17 / other

So what does an artist do when he is supposed to recieve a couple phone calls? What is that artist supposed to do when does promises aren't met. I was supposed to recieve calls today from an upscale resturant and my dentist, regarding my artwork.

Normally I would be pissed about the situation. I don't like to wait around for nothing, when I could be doing other things. I didn't go out and venture today. I just stayed home read and finished another 14x17 picture.

Working in the food service industry, I had to move reletively fast and be ongoing. I feel like I'm at a slow point here and I haven't even gotten on a good start yet. Things seem to be moving slowly. I want to go fast, fast, fast, but everything around me seems to be moving slowly.

Now I'm thinking where else can I send out a packet;what else can I update beside my website; who else can I talk to about advice;ect.,ect.

Granted I have another group exhibition in March & submitting two pieces for another in Feb., & I'm a guest speaker for an art league in Dublin,Ohio, but I feel things are still moving too slow for me.

Am I overlooking a few things here?

Can anyone help?

I agree with Heatherzart "Get over it". But I think if you're feeling things are slow then it's your job to get things going. You have a few irons in the fire...maybe you need a lot more. These opportunities are never going to come to you, you have to make them happen, especially in this economy. So what are you going to do? Research. Who is making it happen and how. See what's working for them and get in on it. Beg, borrow and create opportunites for yourself. The only difference between the nationally known artist and the artist next door is marketing.

It's a really exciting world out there, full of opportunities. Go for it.

A very successful artist in Washington DC once told me to "get over it" and I'm going to say the same to you.  And I don't mean this in a nasty way - I mean it in a good way.  Shake off the negative and move on.  Focus on the things that are going well.  So these people didn't call when they said they woul - get over it!  They weren't worth your time then.  Focus on the fact that you have an upcoming exhibition.  Think of the THOUSANDS of artists out there struggling to get their work seen and you've got a gig.

Nothing ever moves as fast as we'd like it to and that's just human nature.  So I think it's natural for you to be frustrated and feel like things are dragging.  So my advice to you is to take stock in what IS going good and focus on that.

Congratulations on taking the big step and becoming a full time artist!  That's a brave thing to do but your work is fantastic and I think you'll be successful.
