Creativie blocks

06/18/2008 18:28:57 / other

I'm almost finished with completing another drawing and it's been a while I've done anything at all. It appears to me, that what I was mentally getting in the way of is now starting to fade.

I was wondering what do other artist do when they experience these creative blocks?

Hi. I overcome creative blocks by stepping back and doing some scholarship. That is, I read a  bunch of books about artists, look at their work (in books and museums) and jot down or sketch the things that strike me most. Inevitably, one small thing will strike my interest and I'll create a new series of paintings based on that concept. I always work in a series (10 - 20 paintings/series) so I have direction for the two or three years it takes me to paint the entire series. Then, I start over again with the scholarship. I guess everyone has a different approach. Just my two cents :)  Kathy

I read "The Artist's Way" and that helped me get out of a bad funk last year. If you rather not read, then go to a gallery or a museum and browse for a while. Or just pick up your paint brush and do something small. One or more of these should help.
