Artist Safety 102

11/19/2007 21:35:30 / other

One common theme I see often is the use of extension cords as permanent power supplies.  Most of us have been guilty of this at one time or another, but it is just something I want to bring up.  Where the fires have started that I have seen, are from people walking on the extension cords eventually breaking down the wire and causing a short.  Another way is having a cord go under carpet or a piece of furniture that is heavy doing the same thing shorting out and causing a fire.  I like to use the roll up holder that you can get at a home improvement store.  You don't have to mess with the cord around your arm and it is done quick and easy.  For outlets that get taxed (say the computer) like a squid, there is an outlet that has a fusible link and trips it off safely so you don't pull to much power from the receptacle.  Again go to the home improvement store.  Don't be cheap some can also take a minor lightning hit where it will fry and not your expensive equipment.  Just a few more ideas to keep you safe!

Cheers,

Steve

I must tell you that when we first built our house the basement was not completed so I decided to claim some of it as my studio.  I have extension cords going all over the place and my husband would come down, look and joke about it cus I had several going all over the place to where I needed them -almost like a spider web.  I can joke about it know- but I am so glad when we finished our basement. Needless to say, when the real electrician showed up, he was amazed and terrified at the same time.

You bring up a good subject.

I agree, this issue needs addressed.
