Forums are UP!!

10/05/2007 09:30:25 / happy

Hello Everyone,
The Forums are now officially up, the bug has been fixed, and everyone should be able to access the forum correctly now.  ENJOY!

Also, if you are having issues, please comment here.  The top issue so far seems to be cache related.  Here is a great article on how to clear your cache using pretty much every browser known to man.  http://www.deakin.edu.au/itl/dso/guides/qg-clear-cache-cookies-pc-mac.html  It may be a bit old, but should still work for everyone!

Hi Ryan, one more little thing.... The scuttlebutt site hasn't been sending me email notifications of new messages / comments lately.  This started when it came back online the other day.  I double checked to make sure that I had all the right boxes still checked on my setting page, and they were all still checked.

Hi Ryan, I created a seperate bookmark on my computor to go straight to the forum without having to go to scuttlebutt, first.  I have discovered that when I go to the forum using this seperate bookmark, I don't have any trouble accessing the forum and staying logged in, and this has been working for me for a couple of weeks now.  But if i'm already on the scuttlebutt site and I click on any of the forum links, then I only get the shorter restricted version of the forum and I have trouble logging in and staying logged in, although my user name is shown on the bottom of the page as logged into eht forum already.

I don't know if this little info helps or just makes it even more confusing, but i thought i'd let you know...

ta ta,

Annie

OK, sorry I didn't get back sooner - (the life of a tech support person)!!

Anyway - using my Wackydog login, I can't see the forums list - and that's in IE & Firefox. This has gotta be related to the fact that Wackydog existed in the old forum, but I don't have any inspiration (yet) about why.

But, all is well - in both browsers - using Sandpuppy's login. The Firefox users might try making the forum site's URL (that URL, not the community's) an exception in the cookies area (ToolsOptionsPrivacy TabCookiesExceptions button).

We believe that the issues are stemming from the way phpFox/phpBB use cookies.  We don't believe the problem is with integration of the two, but more of an inherent flaw in the way one of them works.  We are still trying to research and fix this problem ASAP.  Luckily it seems to work atleast SOME of the time, as opposed to never!

Add me to the list of Firefox users who cant see the forum.  In IE it works but I hate using IE so I'll keep checking.

OK, so far my theory is holding water. Wackydog only sees the default forums. I created a new account - sandpuppy - and I can see all the old forums in both IE 7 and Firefox.

But, I'll log out, restart the browsers & try again just to be sure this is going to work.

If it does, I'll also try to post my recommended browser settings for students/faculty in case it might help someone else. We are recommending against using Safari with OSX because there are a lot of problems cropping up with new java-based web applets; Firefox works more reliably - though there are still issues.

Hey, Flash - I simply created a new account here with my old username/password that I'd used on the forums. Can't get into the forum a'tall. I don't save anything but session cookies in my browser (old habit) - so I'm wondering if I should've simply created a NEW username/password for myself - because the old one is saved somewhere in the db for the forum???

I'm updating some server software at the moment - and need to sort of monitor that, so I'll keep trying some different things with the forum & let you know. (I manage software that has all KINDS of weird required browser settings  and dos/don'ts.) Maybe I'll get lucky and find something that I can verify, for ya...
