forcing a painting

03/01/2008 19:12:10 / happy

I spent the day working on a painting started in the class I teach and I have to say, I hate painting figures even when its simplified! I feel it is important to demonstrate various subjects so I do cover figures, still life, abstracts, but my true love is landscape painting.

I wonder how many artists force themselves to paint subjects other than what they naturally are drawn toward. Maybe its an exercise and good discipline to do that. If I can get this painting to feel good enough to say "its done", I will be posting it in the gallery.

Commission work is scary to me because I can not read another's mind...and I cannot do something I am not connected to.   Is life about discipline or about following your heart?  Following your heart is a discipline in itself, one we are taught not to follow, but the one that leads to true success!

Creativity flows when we stop setting standards and trust in our own feelings.

but of course, I wouldn't judge the experiences that led me to this understanding as being negative or not worthwhile..It's all life!

I wouldn't do it too much. I think that you are a stronger painter when you paint what you love. It might be necessary sometimes for commisions or instruction, but I would stick to what you love because then your work will most likely connect with the buyer/viewer more cuz you'll be transmitting that...

I end up painting portraits that I HATE to do but am pretty good at...mostly for friends that ask and I can never say no...I have about 3 I have promised but never even started yet.

Robin:  I guess we have all done it at one time or another.  But the older I get, the less patience that I have for doing it.  I started a still life painting last Fall and worked on it for 3 days. It was coming along and I had more to do, but I just could not stand it.  It is still sitting unfinished in the rack.  I have also been on a landscape kick for over a year and having a good time.  When you start to use words like "dicipline", it is starting to sound more like work than fun.

When I get commission work sometimes it's stuff I don't like to do at all. I did one recently (kind of a tropical abstract) and I absolutely HATE the painting, but the customer likes it and it looks good in their house. I was telling my wife the entire time I was painting it that I wanted to put a match to it. If you have to paint to pay bills I'm assuming this will come up from time to time.
