damaged frames = money pit!

01/31/2008 10:37:57 / disappointed

So I just found out one of my paintings got in to the regional 'works on paper' show but the other one did not and when I picked it up there was a new chip in my new frame. As a watercolor painter, framing is crucial to showing work and I am getting tired of always finding damages after submitting work to these big juried shows. I wish there were some sort of frame insurance carried by art associations or I wish the people that were involved in the take in and jurying processes were a litte more careful! I dont mind being a starving artist but I dont want it to be because I am spending all my money replacing damaged frames! Ok, I feel better now... I guess blogging is another way of venting? (I never blogged until I joined this website).

Glad you feel better.  I usually by metal frames, mainly because they're cheaper, but also, from hanging shows at the Watercolor Society, I have found that they really seem to work well visually with the rest of the show.

After looking at your work again, I was woundering what kid of frames you use.  I could see your work framed in natural ruff cut wood, pine, birch, maple etc.  This may be more durable tahn what your currently doing.

I on the other hand haven't submitted anything to anyone in a long time and never framed anything, but have got work back damaged and it can really tick you off.  Part of the trade I guess.

I was reading a book by Carrol Mitchel(sp.?) titled "How To Survive & Prosper As An Artist" and she was mentioning about insurance for artist/artwork. I don't know any off hand, but I'll see if there any insurance groups that insures artwork.
