art and the economy

05/04/2008 21:35:56 / disappointed

This weekend was another reality check for me - last night I was a featured artist that painted during a silent auction, then my painting was sold in the live auction.. and I have to say, the bidding was skimpy and depressing. Then today I had to pick up paintings from a gallery (a group show that has just ended) and although I did sell one small painting, the gallery owner informed me he didnt think he would be opened past June unless things turned around big time. On a personal level I have been coming to terms with the reality of the economy and I know I have to find other ways to create income until things in this country turn around. I have felt better about my art on a personal level, but that doesnt change the fact that people would rather buy gasoline than paintings! lets all hope things in this country get better soon.

p.s here is the 'wet paint' piece I did last night

Nice job on the above painting : )

Unfortunately art isn't a necessity and when the media keeps smashing the public's brain about how bad things are going to be then everyone stops doing what they usually do. Everything would be better in this country if people would stop listening to the news.

Things will turn around...they always do.

Here in this part of Missouri, art is one of the last things most common folk will pay for.  (I appeal to the common people, which is great, since I am one...but common folks don't have money)!  I am fortunate to get some mural jobs, but a large mural only nets me $4,000 tops.  I don't mind, though, because I'm not starving...God has blessed me beyond my expectations, and I just need to stay busy after my nest emptied out of the little birdies that occupied my mind before.  I sure don't mean to downsize your problems...it hurts to see art become a burden instead of a benefit...very painful.  I have given up thinking about galleries and supportive rich people, and that has really relieved me of my burdens about selling my art.  In fact, I donate quite a bit.  If I had to depend on myself for income, I would actually work at McDonalds to make ends meet.  Seriously...that's how bad it is, economy-wise, for me here as a "professional artist".  A couple nationally known artists that live in this town have their work in western galleries in order to sell paintings...they do okay here, but not great.

I know what you mean.  I try and stay positive.  I worked for a small frameshop business last year, and the owner called me one morning, and shut the doors that day.  I have since been with a larger retailer, ACMoore, in hopes of better job security.  People lately, in the past two weeks, have been spending stimulous money in expectation that their 600.00 government checks are comming in.  And yes, that is what they are telling me as they are dropping 500.00 on frame jobs.  So, hopefully more of our community will be seeing a small increase.  Keep your head up.

The economy is in pretty bad shape. I'm trying to make adjustments, creating smaller works between the laspe time I create my larger drawings.

I love the painting that you posted here! I wish I could see in person.

Hi That's a nice piece- so sorry to hear your experience but I'm afraid it's pretty common among artists. Most of my art friends are saying the same type of things. Try to be positive,I know its hard- but I heard the economy is slowly starting to emerge---- I hope it's true!

Gas prices have so much to do with it!
