Natural Awakenings Magazine
DATE: 07/18/2008 22:07:37 / MOOD: happy
Hey Guys! The Natural Awakenings Magazines are out there now, and I found one printer that actually put the whole magazine online (so cool!)
If anyone would like to see the magazine that put my painting, "Monarch on Yellow Flower", on the cover, here is what the Portland, Oregan Edition looks like:
http://www.naportland.com/images/Jul08Issue.pdf
The cover will actually look different from city to city due to the different franchise rights of the printers. I have seen 3 different printers issues, and all were different. If you see one other than Charlotte NC, Grand Strand SC, or Portland OR, let me know. I'd love to get copies from the different printers that chose my work for their covers. Thanks guys for all the continued support!

Choose the right print size for your art
DATE: 06/15/2008 10:38:57 / MOOD: full of life
As some of you already know, I am a custom framer for a living. Often times I get customers who walk into my shop, looking for a ready made frame to drop their recent purchase into, and they are always psyched about it.
Unfortunately, more times than not, the producer of the artwork did not make it an easy task, and custom framing is necessary because it is not a standard size. So after looking at the frames in the front of the shop for 50.00 or less, now they are having to look at frames that cost hundreds of dollars more than what they originally paid for the artwork. It is really hard to convince someone who bought your poster print for 30.00 to put a custom frame on it for 200.00. They always look at me, and say that is more than the art is worth. This is when some of them will either bite the bullet, and pay to have the custom frame on it, or they will roll it back up, take it home, and throw it in the back of the closet in their spare bedroom.
Much of this problem could be eliminated by having your printer print your poster prints into standard sized formats. Those would be:
8 X 10 9 X 12 10 x 13 11 x 14 16 x 20 18 x 24
22 x 28 24 x 30 24 x 36 30 x 40
Some of the general public realizes the value of custom framing, such as UV protection in the glass, and acid free backing and mats. These guys were going to have your poster framed no matter what. This blog is not about them.
Others have no interest in this, and these are the guys who will throw your print in their next garage sale. And the cycle starts again. I get alot of garage sale customers as well, who got your print for a dollar. Try convincing these guys that your print is worth 200.00 in framing. These guys always say to me, I guess this is why it wasn't already in a frame. And I usually laugh and say it probably would have cost less back then to have it done too.
Also, don't let your printer convince you to print your stuff in standard metric sizes if you live in the USA. Metric sizes are a custom job as well. Hope this helps keep at least a few of your poster prints out of garage sale bins.

Biography
DATE: 06/09/2008 23:01:47 / MOOD: don't know
I have to put together a short bio for a magazine that wants my art on their cover. It is awesome to be picked for something like that. I feel weird writing a bio on myself. I have always felt a little weird putting my life into words. Feelings, not so much a problem as you can see. But, I just feel a little bit egotistical writing out information about myself. This reminds me of a conversation I had with my mother last Christmas where whe questioned me about having a few framed posters behind my couch, when my handmade paintings were leaning up against the wall on the floor. I told her that I couldn't look at my own stuff hanging up looking back at me. I paint, get it out, and it is done. That conversation has haunted me for a while, I now have two of my own paintings hanging on my wall. I have a big swollen ego I guess. Really, I need to get over it. Being an artist is all about big ego. We are in fact creaters, creating our own new univereses.
Yeah, I feel better now. I should totally write this thing... Maybe an artists statement while I am at it. Then my eulogy...

sick

So, I have sat around all day feeling sorry for myself, after some woman sneezed on me the other day in KMart, and now I am sick.
I did a little painting. More experimenting I suppose. I am trying to thicken up my acrylic paintings, adding lots of texture, and believe I may have found a cool trick using only paint. 'Got some more experimenting to do before I decide if I like it though.

Booking Hotels in London - Amy Windland
DATE: 05/07/2008 10:39:52 / MOOD: other
I am exhausted. I will be travelling to London in July, and my friend Kim and I spent a better portion of Yesterday evening trying to pick out a Hotel online. She introduced me to a site called Hotwire.com. Has anyone else tried this site? You don't get to see the name or exact location of the hotel before booking. She's used them for airline tickets before, but never for hotel. I feel a little apprehensive of buying a few nights at a hotel I know nothing about except what the site says the rating is. Give me some feedback if you've got experience with these guys. -Amy Windland

First Butterfly
DATE: 05/05/2008 10:50:39 / MOOD: happy
I put up the first butterfly in my pics that I ever painted, if anyone is interested in seeing my humble begginings. I would not have thought before I started painting these guys, how difficult and meticulous you must be to accurately portray them. My more recent ones have been more successful I believe, but I always like to see the progression.

Butterfly series
DATE: 05/04/2008 22:08:26 / MOOD: happy
I posted a few more items in my gallery. They're all butterflies. The first that I had posted (Monarch) was an acrylic painting, but the 3 I posted today were all oils that I completed in the last year. Jay's Butterfly, and the Monarch were in the SC State Fair last year. Leave me some comments, let me know what you guys think.

Note: Jay's Butterfly was inspired by a photograph taken by Jay Cossey, a really good nature photographer. You should google him if you like insects.

I'm new here!
DATE: 05/03/2008 21:12:24 / MOOD: lonely
As you may have seen from my mood, I am new and lonely here. I would like to invite anyone to be my friend on here. I am exhausted today. I worked all day at my Real Job, and that would be at ACMOORE. I am a custom framing sales associate. It's a decent job I guess for any artist to have. Anyways, I haven't completely figured this site out, cause I have only been on here for about 30 minutes. Somebody shoot me a message, or add me as a friend. You can see my work at http://www.yessy.com/amywindland if you're interested. Thanks.
