Annual Summer Art Market Announces Best of Show
DATE: 07/22/2008 13:24:30 / MOOD: full of life

This year’s 16th annual Summer Art Market announces best of show, Sara Sisun
Summer Art Market provides artists with an opportunity to showcase and sell their work directly to the public. This event assists in supporting the local art community and the Art Students League of Denver alike.   Awards were presented to artists showcasing talent in a variety of categories. “Best of Show” was presented to Sara Sisun, for her brilliant display. “I can't thank the League enough for the encouragement, the classes, everything. It's been a huge part of my life since I was about six years old.”  Currently Sisun is a studio art major at Stanford University. “It's so nice to know that the League is still there for me, because it has been all along.” Sisun’s history at the Art Students League was fundamental to her growth as an artist.

“Winning best of show means a lot to me as I am hoping to be a professional painter, and winning the award was encouraging. I believe that my painting improves when I am more confident, as I am more willing to push ideas or techniques.” Sisun’s work is often non traditional and is proud about receiving recognition for thinking outside the box.

Emilio Lobato, a member of the Board of Directors, was a facilitator to the judges of the event and privy their discussion. “I was struck at how quickly and decisively they came to a conclusion about Sara.  For about 30 seconds before the official tallying began, the judges were quick to discover that their over-all favorite was Sara. Regardless of her age, they considered her the best.”

The Mantra Trailer: Parked at the Intersection of Imagination, Evangelism and Propaganda!
DATE: 04/16/2008 18:22:24 / MOOD: other

A Partnership between Platte Forum and the Art Students League of Denver. The Art Students League’s visiting artist series is generously funded by the Olson-Vander Heyden Foundation
man·tra   /ˈmæn trə, ˈmɑn-, ˈmʌn-/ Pronunciation Key[man-truh]  –noun
In eastern spiritual traditions, a mantra is a sacred word, chant or sound that is repeated during mediation to facilitate the transformation of consciousness. In mass media, a mantra is an expression or idea that is repeated seeking to define, simplify and control complex realities.
The Mantra Trailer is a traveling mediation space, recording studio and site of mysterious broadcast in the form of a 1972 breadbox trailer. As community-based art with an emphasis on civic-engagement, the Mantra Trailer provides an interface for the human voice as a counter to globalization and the enculturation of consumerism.
The Mantra Trailer, parked in the south parking lot of the League, invites you inside to privately contemplate, chant, voice and record your prayers, aspirations, desires, frustrations and petitions for the transformation of self and society—anything that resonates within you in your life, work or play. Meanwhile, dialogue is initiated on the outside as people encounter the exterior, which is equipped with an ultrasound, directional speaker that continuously broadcasts a mix of pre-recorded mantras.
Performance Experience:  Friday, May 2   |   5:30–8:00 pm
Location: Art Students League, 200 Grant Street   |   FREE and open to the public
