Welcome! I am excited about being a new artist on this website-it is really quite something! An avid Art Calendar reader and an avid artist, I spend pretty much every day in the studio painting. I do small pastels, and work on larger pastels. I absolutely love pastels- they are immediate, gestural, expressive, and spontaneous!
I love being able to just pick one up and start immediately making marks! I have also painted in oils, but I find them to be too laborious! Which brush to use, which color to mix with the other color, is my canvas gessoed? You get the picture. Sorry brush painters!
I have been an artist my whole life, but recently have been able to work in the studio full time- we are empty nesters now!
Oh, and I get my inspiration from the southwest- I love it there and hope to make it my home someday.

Hi, you asked how long it takes me to make my videos for Youtube. It takes me ages! Months sometimes, because I'm relatively new to film making. Lots to learn about camera, lighting, sound and editing. Its great fun though.

Pastels must be one of the few mediums I haven't tried. You create lovely works with them.Which type of pastels do you prefer?

RF Oil sticks are richer than others I have tried.  These are not oil pastels, they are like tube oils with just enough wax to make them bars, but then they cut back on the oil.  Shiva makes some less expensive ones to try, but you will not get hooked on them.

I can relate to your pastel infatuation, but I can never really find the right colors!  I am always loooking for something in between, something that keeps me coming back to oils and a brush.  Any brush, really.  So I am using RF oil sticks in adition to satisfy my tactile urges, along with those purple gloves to keep the heavy metals out of my system.

 

Beautiful work!  Do you like the bird's eye view for some reason?

Thanks!  Our wildlife pieces sell really well, better than most figurative, but I think it has a lot to do with the price point.  The figuratives tend to be more challenging and I obsess over the finish work on them which reflects in the final numbers.  And you know how it is here in the Northwest, you can't create too many heron pieces!  For the last few years, though, whimsical and fantasy related pieces seem to sell VERY well.  I don't ever presume to have customers figured out, but I kind of think that the more solemn world events get, the more people need to escape into "pretend".  The figurative pieces are more self indulgent.


We live in the Willamette Valley, toward the coast from Eugene.  We used to do quite a few festivals in Seattle (we also lived there 20 years ago) but stay busy enough staying mainly between Portland (where we also used to live) and Eugene.  I'm just SO thankful to get to make a living as an artist and still live in the Northwest.  Do you do art shows and festivals?  If so, please let me know if you ever attend any in Oregon.  I'd love to come see your work in person!  I've used many mediums before I settled into steel, but I NEVER got a feel for pastels.  I can relate to the appreciation for immediacy that you expressed.  I'm an impatient artist.  When I get an inspiration, I want to start now and I don't want to stop until it's done! 


I really look forward to seeing more of your work and maybe crossing paths one of these days!
