Thanks for the recent visit and the compliments on my work.  Your piece "Untitled" is my favorite.  I really like the "explosion" of color/energy.

All the best,

I visited you earlier because I had been really struck by the church windows in your painting when I saw it in the Main Gallery.  Just beautiful!!

Jared,

Thanks for your much, too kind, words. You have some wonderful works yourself. Your illustrative type portraits are excellent. Great detail.

I wish I knew more about the technical aspects of painting - I am really not very sure about my painting... seems to always be a struggle in the dark. I have enjoyed going out en plein air; perhaps it has helped me to learn something about color...I don't know, but thanks again for your encouragement.

I know what you mean about the signature... some days I can in fact write my name, and some days I struggle to get it down in a readable manner. What 's up with that?

Jared,

Great work! I love the architecture. Very well done and your compositions are very inviting.

Thank you for the constructive criticism.  It is appreciated and accepted.  Perfection is a journey all artists are on.

Hi Jared, Glad the comments were of value. One thing I should mention - I am kind of a low bucks guy being retired; and there are more professional cameras out there. I bought the Canon A650 for the 6x optical zoom and the 12.1 mag sensor. If your sister is just getting into it I believe this would be a good camera, but for $100 more she could buy the Canon G9   that can also shoot in a Raw file format. My son in law in San Francisco is a commercial photographer and shoots in Raw format.  In raw you get the image right out of the sensor without any image processing in the camera. I think this format provides more flexibility, but I also believe it take a very experienced Photoshop person to take advantage of the feature. Just thought I should mention it.  Best Wishes - W

Sorry - one more thought from Walt. The picture of my dog Joey was oil on masonite from a photo. I then scanned the painting into photoshop -Modified the composition and color. Then I added the texture with the computer. I call this my iterative approach. In between steps I do a paper copy and experiment with colored pencils then back to the computer for a final tweek to get the digital version. Then back to the oil painting to incorporate the changes. - W

Hi Jared - Thanks for your note appreciate your thoughts on color and your questions. Most of my recent work has been digital. I have been selling prints of my oils that I generate myself with an Epson R1800. The Big Sur seascape for example. I digitize through my camera or scanner. A lot of my work starts with a pastel sketch on black paper. I digitize then use Photoshop Elements to Manipulate the sketch. I am an engineer by training so my approach and heavy use of my computer allows fast changes in color and composition. I love oils and would like to end up taking my digital rendering and do oil on canvas freehand from the rendering. I have printed on canvas with the R1800 with good results but the brush strokes are gone. I have tried "enhancing" the print on canvas with limited success. I shoot sunset and canvases with a 12 .1 meg Canon A650 low iso and full resolution - noise is always a challenge with digital photography, but its an outstanding technology. My prints are done on Epson glossy photopaper; the quality is good (~100 year life under glass), but on the computer screen there is a richness (brightness) that comes from the energy intensity in the tube. Best Wishes Jared - Walt
