I'm a self taught artist with a full time job in an Equine Veterinary Clinic. My last of 3 children left home last year- and I finally feel like it's my time to seriously pursue the development and sale of my art, and stop giving it away. I'm a marketing moron. Joining Scuttlebutt has been such a huge resource of inspiring creative people- many of whom are eager to share their ideas, techniques, and advice- all of which I wholeheartedly seek out and absorb like a sponge. I love having people respond to my posted pieces, and my hand is on fire for wanting to get the next idea on paper. As some of you have figured out- I'm nuts about trees. I'm intrigued with finding human features in branches, bark, and old stumps. I'm crazy about detail. The finest tip black ink pens were my friends for 20 years- and I'm trying to learn how to use color. I love seeing works that explode and are bold with it, that flow, and have light. Always I think "How did you do that!" A Scuttlebutt member suggested I buy the biggest filbert I could get and try painting something big. That hasn't happened yet, but there are more colors appearing all the time. I welcome any and all comments and advice- and I say thank you to everyone who has encouraged me to grow as an artist. You inspire me more than you know.

Trees! Bare feet and worn out jeans, my family, creative people, art supply catalogs, beaches, big skies, hiking, homemade bread, snowstorms, the sun, the moon, any mountain, anywhere. LIFE.

smoking, negative people, wasps, abuse of the environment, burnt toast

art, making art, looking at art, hiking, gardening, working out, travelling, everything outdoors

Hi selliot, a while ago you sent me a message that i tried to answer but it did not go through. Here is your message and my answer.

"Do you think it's easier to get great detail on small works or large ones? I rarely work on anything bigger than 11 x =
14". i use pen and ink and watercolor, and colored pencil. Thanks for =
you comment."

Small detail tends to look fussy in large  paintings and in smaller works it draws one in for closer inspection.  However I can point out works that are just the opposite and work fine. Detail is of no interest to me for its own sake, when it is at the service of the whole that it becomes important as in the many strokes of the pen to get the feeling of horse hair or dots of paint to indicate the wind ruffling water. However many great masters have the technique to indicate detail with broad strokes and an few telling small touches. For horses, Google, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer.

Cheers, Lawrence Wallin

I really enjoy your work, and like many others, I'm taken by your trees! You do them justice, and with humor too! I spend time in the Adirondack wilderness, often alone, and I feel the presence of trees so strongly. They are remarkable entities. Your art is a complement to them - clearly you share a deep communion with them, and I'm sure with all life. Keep it up!

You do my ego a great service. Thank you!!!   Your drawing table awaits you... Set aside 5 minutes, you'll go 10... Set aside 10, you'll go 15... You'll be soooo glad you did. Some nights I have to force myself to start. I have yet to regret it.  Happy drawing...  -Don

Hi Sue, Once again you have intuitively picked up on something... The working title from "Moonstruck" was "Melancholy". I didn't want to stigmatize him, though. I wanted the emotion to come thru the visual...not the name. Isn't it amazing what color, point-of-view, and lighting can convey? Thanks for your comments.  -Don

Thank you for you comments on my work, glad you liked it!. That's the thing with summer: unless its raining, who wants to be inside?

Hi, I just wanted to tell you that I love your work. Your trees are amazing!. I loved the horses, too, but the trees blew me away!

Hi Sue, LTNS!

I am not on this website as much these days, maybe I got burnt out early on.. also, I am busy painting, and working on plans for the fall. Let me know how you feel after you read the book. I think Jeanne Carbonetti is more abstract a painter than I am, especially with her color choices. I look forward to seeing more of your art (after you read the book!)

Robin
