An artist living and working in New England, Gregory paints landscapes using vivid and extrodinary colors. He describes his work as expressionist, after the movement that arose around the time of World War One. He has been influenced by their subjectgation of realism in favor of the use of form and color to portray stronger feeling, imaginary scenes or symbols their work.

Gregory also sculpts, and this discipline has influenced his approach to the simplification of forms in his painting.

You will experience the most incredible freedom in using your fingers to paint!  I use gloves now and then but it isn't the same.  I have a connection to my pieces and my fingers start to take me where they want to go!

I like your landscapes and the color usage.  I like the fact that you are not afraid to use color!

I only use white paint at the very end of a watercolor painting if I need to add spatter or light touches of white highlights.. or maybe if I need to highlight my birch trees in a painting, but using white paint with watercolors leads to mud if you arent careful and I never use it til the very end.

Hi gregoryalbright  aka top friend, I dont know what medium you are working in but since I only know about watercolor I can suggest how to create depth using watercolor only - I paint in layers, first is the wash, then dry the paint, then is the next layer of wash, defining composition and creating depth, then dry the paint, then is detail work, done working dry. I build depth with my paint layers in washes and glazes which allows for the transparency of the medium to reflect the depth of the painted washes which leads to the depth of the painting. At the end, if I really need to push things back into more depth perspective, I might toss in some spatter. So thats how I do it, but you may find a better way will work for you.

Yes, I decided to use my PR photo on this site but I had to figure out how to resize it before I could post it although I figured that out too. I like when you can see a persons face.

HI Gregory: The film professors were great! Thoughtful, challenging etc. I did a San Fran State 6 week intensive one summer. The animation teachers taught me how to draw also. It was the art school painting teacher who carried a razor in his pocket. That's why I ended up working in television. I knew decent people art teacher in college - it was just the art school that sucked.

Yesterday I was looking at colleges for my daughter. We were in a theatre department and one of the acting teachers gave his life story - about starving in London to do stage design. A friend offered him a teaching job in Chicago - but he had had such bad experiences with teachers that he refused. A few weeks later his friend convinced him that he didn't have to teach the way he was taught. That turned a big light bulb on for him. We ended up in Seattle after Stuart finished his engineering education.

I love these new paintings you put up. Nicely done!!  Barbara

You hit the nail on the head; I do relate to Scully in many ways.
Wish I was lucky enough to have the art museum down the street,
soon...very soon (see www.amoa.org). I've also been finding connections
with the gee's bend ladies - seems there is something innately human in
the making, measuring, connecting and rearranging the shapes, textures
and colors..."an abstract narrative of thought and emotion". I'm
working more with "worn looking" paired with "new/fresh" more recently,
hope to post some new work soon in between trips to europe and the far
east ;).
