Thanks for your comment. Yes, the abstract landscapes are the direction I'm pursuing. I love your portrait of the young girl. Very compelling.

Thanks for the comment on Barn II.  It is the 3rd in a series the first being the one called Barn Down the Road and then Barn I,  Barn II.  We talked about scratching the paint off the canvas, which I did in Barn I.  I like it in person, hard to tell in this photo how it looks, but I am not fully satisfied with the results and want to try it in other works.  By the way, the blues in Barn I are actually more of a purple and in Barn II the yellow gold is more vivid.  Trying to get accurate digital color is a challenge. I'm learning how to use the white balance.

Do you mix the retarder with your paint on a pallet?  I have just been putting the floetrol in a dixie cup and dipping my paint brush in it while I am painting....I'm not sure that is the proper way to use it as a paint extender.  Using it that way only seems to help me with blending, but doesn't extend the drying time.

I've never used anything other than water, so I won't have anything to compare it to.  The floetrol did work well, but seemed to change the color of the paint a bit (I really think I like water better for thinning the paint) - but for blending into another paint it seemed to do the job - what do you use?

It's funny how sometimes we don't like a painting at first, then it grows on us.  You asked if my work is plein air, some is, some isn't.  Last summer I painted mostly en plein air, which is very helpful as the observations carry over into the studio. When winter hits, I use reference photos, but I try to keep them only as "reference".  I'm working on simplification and not getting too fussy w/ detail--trying to catch mood, light, the feeling of a place or season.  That initial 'ahhh' reaction to light, color.....

I could still have a picture in front of me and never it get it to look like yours.  Yes, I use both - water and have just been experimenting with Floetrol (a latex paint conditioner).

Thank you for the kind words.  Abstract painting has become my first love (mostly because I can't draw worth beans - lol)...and getting the perspective of things is so hard (as you seem to have done a fabulous job of in your tree pictures above)...

To answer your question: My subjects are all photographed by me.  I have spent years visiting wild life parks and preserves, zoos and sanctuaries.  Did lots of "schmoozing" to get behind the scenes when I could.  The beautiful Indian women I occasionally paint are friends, acquaintances, dancers at pow wows or connected to some of the shows I do.     me
