Biography

Al Borrego was born and now resides in El Paso, Texas. A self-taught artist, he began painting in June of 2007. He has exhibited in many venues and has various scheduled exhibits on the 2008 calendar. Al plans to continue exhibiting his work nationally and internationally. Al is well traveled, having lived in Europe and throughout the United States. He has been on extensive travel throughout Central and South America, including the Caribbean.

Artist Statement

I have a love of exploration and an interest in change and growth – that love, is what inspires this painter. In each moment of painting, one is required to explore and let go of the fear of change and outcome. Painting is the most magnificent teacher and requires that we live in the peaceful state of moment to moment consciousness. That is which connects me, to joy.
My work addresses the vision between my muse and the canvas, which is driven by eye appeal and attention to detail. Life is beautiful as it is, without a need for embellishment or simplification. The intention of my work is to convey the beauty of nature by representing it as accurately as possible. There is nothing more satisfying than to capture the essence of an animal within a single image, to feel the life in an inanimate painting, to look into the eyes of a painting and see the animal's soul. Ultimately, both the creation and observation of art are highly personal experiences. Done well, art yields a benefit to both the artist and the viewer.

Calcutta!  Absolutely..   India  would be one of the most fascinating places in the entire world....Well, the Pryamids in Egypt too.

But Back to India,  Yes it has been a big dream of mine to go to India, and especially Calcutta.  I have an artist friend who spent several months in Calcutta with Mother Theresa and her organization...he served as a Brother and took care of the sick....I have read a great deal about Calcutta..  You should read the book  "A Fine Balance"  Such a wonderful, deep, amazing story about Indian culture.

My brother was adopted from India as an infant, and My mom hosted several Yogi's from India.  we also had 2 priest who were brothers stay in our home for several months while they were visiting in America......all this influence while I was growing up...

You talk of Venice the way I would talk of Paris...and yes Anywhere in Ireland is a good place for tall glass of Beer.  I was in Ireland last spring...I have several relatives there...My Nana was born there in 1911, came to America in 1928....

Thanks for the friend invite. IF you didn't paint before 2007 what were you doing with your creativity?

Oops, I didnt mean to be negative about TN...I love the Smokey mountains....It's just I'm a mountain girl...and having lived on 2 ocean coasts......Well, I'm so landlocked here in Memphis....and summers where it is 100 degrees for 2 months out of the year and killer mosquitos....ahhh...I'm a traveler too, when not in the physical..definitely in the dream world!!!!!

thank god no I'm not a TN native...originaly form Ohio, then the east coast then the west coast...After several years in Berkeley,CA...I rarely admit that I am from anywhere else.  Yea talk about views...The bay, The Pacific coast, the mountains...and then there are the people,  Yes!  very diverse...and of course California wines....  but , I have yet to get to SA... I've been studying a lot about the Shamans and healers and the masters who worked with the Ayahuasca vine.....I am working on plans to visit Machu Picchu...have been researching the 5 day hike up the mountains to the spiritual, mystical site...but I have read recently that it has become very popular and over crowded.....

Yes!  I have definitely heard  oil eats canvas,  but the other beneficial thing to a first layer or primer is that it helps the actual work slide on much smoother...So quite a job you've done to apply the paint and have it absorb so quickly into the canvas (maybe oil is a little easier than acrylic which tends to dry quickly..

And you are a traveler...Which country/area in south America do you like the most?

You are right!  Ultimately, both the creation and observation of art are highly personal experiences. Done well, art yields a benefit to both the artist and the viewer.

but whether it is done "well" or done"terribly unwell"  It is all in the eye of the beholder...

Hi Al,   Crumbs in the butter, it made me laugh...yesterday I caught the cat up on the counter eating the crumbs out of the butter that i acccidentally left out....ha ha ha. anyway, thanks for your compliments...the second that you like I called FLOW...it is brighter, bigger, more enthusiasm in the whole process of making it.

You haven't been painting for very long yet you are very good....it's nice to see also that you have gotten envolved and out there into the community so quickly...Good luck with your shows coming up this year!!!
