My involvement in art is growing with time. For many years, I worked on art projects in different media only during summers and occasional evenings to fit in with my career in education.
Since 2000, I’ve been able to devote more time to my artwork, and it's taken center stage in my life. I'm working only in colored pencil right now doing mostly figurative and landscape pieces. It's a medium that suits my style of representational art and lets me to use my favorite art tool—a pencil. I create color in my work by putting down one layer of pencil over another so the mixing of colors is done on the paper, not on a palette.
The artistic process begins for me when I notice something that moves me with its humor or poetry or even quirkiness. If I’m lucky, I can capture the moment in a photo and create a painting from it so I can continue enjoying it and share it with others. I like bright, bold colors to convey the energy I experience. Often I am attracted to people in a particular setting that suggests a narrative, but a bowl of beans or a stunning sunset can also move me. |
