John Prine, Mark Knopfler, all the old 60's bands, classical

My favorite contemporary author is James Lee Burke. His characterization is gripping, and his prose so beautiful it brings tears to your eyes. I have read every one of his novels. I also love entertaining reads by Vince Flynn, Nelson DeMille, and others in this genre. Other excellent authors are Jim Harrison and Pat Conroy. I enjoy reading about the brain and about how we learn. Great books that fit this category are Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman and Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. Both are fascinating. Finally, the book of all books - the Bible.

I rarely make time to go to the movies. I have loved 'It's a Wonderful Life' for years; the message is so powerful. I also enjoy movies that have beautiful scenery. I am not able to travel very much but am such a visual person that I feast on these kinds of movies.

I recently retired from a full time career as an English teacher at a charter school here in San Diego County. I am not good at marketing, so Art Calendar is a great resource as I try to learn how to promote my work. My favorite part of the Art Calendar magazine is articles by Jack White; I look forward to each of his wise and inspiring articles.
I have sold paintings, mainly southwestern portraits of Indians which I still love to do. I consider myself a Western artist. I am currently doing commission work, mainly children's portraits. I have worked in most mediums but am currently working mainly in pastel. I have also recently completed a large watercolor and also a small oil painting, so I have been branching out a bit. My subject remains paintings of figures and faces.

Great portraits.  I always study faces in paintings, and yours are so well done.

SanDiego beaches are so beautiful, and deep compared to New England. I once stayed at the Del Coronado for a business conference, and it was hard to go to meetings with that wide, white beach beckoning! Keep the faith, Lisabeth

Wow! You have some great portrait work. Very well done, very warm feeling.

Thanks for you kind comment.

p.s. I love Jack Whites "down to earth" approach as well. Nothing like good ol' common sense, something that is lacking in our current culture.

Hi lucinda,

The water situation seems to be hanging in there.  We are still able to shower!  It is a worry though because we all use so much water compared to people in other countries.  Things and expectations have to change as the weather and the world changes.  We have had quite a bit of rain in the last few weeks but is the summer is hot and dry?!!!!!!

Lately we have had a lot of movies made here in Rhode Island.  :)  There's certainly lots to see in New England - very beautiful coastline, islands, old architecture, etc.  My favorite unspoiled place is Block Island...and I hope it stays that way.  So, there's lots to paint!  I've never been to California...maybe some day.  I've been gathering information on web sales for artwork and one of the things they recommend is a blog, so I started one on blogger.  I made a commitment (to myself) to put out artwork on a regular basis.  After all, if you do get people to view your blog, you don't want them to lose interest because you don't post there regularly, so that has been my incentive to do more painting.  Just this week I joined a "Daily Painting Marketplace" (it's almost daily paintings) to get more exposure.  Quite a  while ago, I did a few commissioned children's portraits...but at the time my work as a nurse and my family took most of my time.  I joined the local watercolor society as a member, and I have sold a few paintings there....    I certainly love what I'm doing!

Your work is very nice.  One of my first paintings.....I won't say how long ago that was....was of an indian in oil.  Your portraits are beautiful.

Noticed that you had viewed my offerings and wanted to thank you and say that I think you are very accomplished.I live in Quebec Canada , but I'm very familiar with your neck of the woods; because my sister lives in Santee Cal. Beautiful work!  Rick
