I was born in Mexico City, Mexico during the 60’s. I studied Art at Wright State University. My life is full of experiences that have allowed me to develop as an artist. Being born in Mexico has embedded great fondness for what most people would label as morbid images. Mexican art is a mixture of pre-Hispanic images blended with the graphic, and sometimes terrifying, images of a bleeding and battered Jesus. The horrendous realities of constant war and political instability that the country experienced from 1810 to the 1930’s were the inspiration of many great artists. Some wanted to use their artistic abilities to attest to the brutal every day life in Mexico. Others used their art to express their political opinions. When I paint or create sculptures I see a fusion of influences from my native country. Jose Maria Velasco and his landscapes, Posada and his morbid sense of humor, Diego Rivera and his desire to show us the harsh reality of the life of the Mexican peasants oppressed by the bourgeoisie, and Frida Kahlo, who painted from the heart in order for us to sense her physical and psychological torture.

Hi Gabriela~

Thanks for stopping by my site and  leaving your nice comments.  Your art is very intriguing.  There's a real Mexican-folky feel to it that I love!  Your handling of color also evokes and builds on that southwestern/Mexican feel.  In particular I love your landscape, and also your skeleton pictures that portray the deep feelings of angst in the midst of the everyday.  I hope you go on and push at these concepts more as I feel you are really saying something with them.  Good Luck!

Your art shows great diversity, powerful imagery and a wonderful use of contrast!  I really like reading the backstory about your art, and especially the pre-Hispanic influences.  That's the kind of reflection that provides added depth to art, and yours is tremendously strong.

Thanks Gabriella for your nice comments on my work.  I have worked hard to seek the deeper meaning of life, only to find that one need not work hard to find it at all.  It is right there in everything if only we choose to see, feel, and love....

Gabriela,

Thanks for your comments about my work!  I see that you live in VA.  If you need any assistance or ideas for getting around Philly, let me know, I grew up there, and I live in S. Jersey, just 15 minutes away from the city.  If you have not been here before, I'd be happy to help and make suggestions for dining too! Let me know!

Gabriela,

Lovely works!  I love the 3 faces, feels like an emergence from the Maya to the present.  My first trip of the US when I was in college, was to Mexico, and I just fell in love with it.  Traveled some in the Yucatan, especially loved Chichen Itza, and did a number of paintings inspiried by my trip when I came back.  I love Diego Rivera and Frida Khalo too!  There is an exhibit of Frida's work coming to Philadelphia in a few weeks, I can't wait to see it.  Keep painting!
