I was born in Mexico City, Mexico during the 60’s. I studied Art at Wright State University. My life is full of experiences that have allowed me to develop as an artist. Being born in Mexico has embedded great fondness for what most people would label as morbid images. Mexican art is a mixture of pre-Hispanic images blended with the graphic, and sometimes terrifying, images of a bleeding and battered Jesus. The horrendous realities of constant war and political instability that the country experienced from 1810 to the 1930’s were the inspiration of many great artists. Some wanted to use their artistic abilities to attest to the brutal every day life in Mexico. Others used their art to express their political opinions. When I paint or create sculptures I see a fusion of influences from my native country. Jose Maria Velasco and his landscapes, Posada and his morbid sense of humor, Diego Rivera and his desire to show us the harsh reality of the life of the Mexican peasants oppressed by the bourgeoisie, and Frida Kahlo, who painted from the heart in order for us to sense her physical and psychological torture.

Thank you for your kind words.  I enjoyed looking through your gallery.  I am not one of those people who thinks those images are morbid.  Perhaps it's because I've had to deal with so much grief in my life, including helping grieving parents see and hold their dead children.  So those particulary, touched me.

Thanks for your comments on my skies- I agree. The city one is not my favorite, and I think I might just delete it. I did it for a special purpose, and is the only one like that. (it's going into the Jacksonville International Airport which is the city pictured). The main focus of my work is truly the humid skies of Florida. When I looked at your gallery, I felt that some of the work had more of a Mexican flavor than others. There's something about the palette and movement of the figures. I love that. One of my favorite artists is Maribel Angel. She's not a memebr here, but you can google her. I think you'd like seeing her work.

For some reason the word s-t-y-l-e-s was changed to "titles". Not sure why but please note that in my previous message the second paragraph should read "I find myself exploring different s-t-y-l-e-s of painting..."

I started collecting masks several years ago. I've always been fascinated by masks, especially after finding out how much they influenced the early work of the Cubists. One day I needed subject matter and I took down a mask to paint. From that an obsession was born.

I find myself exploring different titles of painting and having a common subject matter has kept me from seeming "all over the place" with my work. Sometimes I project my ideas onto the masks, but usually they project onto me...

Gariela,

I like your versatility of subject matter. I know you mentioned about an art show in Marysville. When is the exact date & time?

I'm part of a group exhibtion in April myself at the High Road Gallery in Worthington,Oh. The opening reception is April 6th. and is sponsered by the Dublin Area Art Legue.

Other than that I feel a lot of your art you haved displayed here is very poetic.

Thanks for visiting my work. After reading your bio I understand why you picked the one you did as a favorite... BTW, I see you live in Hampton Roads now. I used to be the Art Director at NewsChannel 3...

Your work reminds me of my college days in Mexico. Dia de los Muertos was THE celebration that me and my classmates spent a lot of time preparing for.

Hey Ya.   WOW!!!   That is one of the best comments I have ever
had.  To be mentioned in the same breath as Korda.  WOW!  After all, it
was his picture that started it all for the world.  (you know what I
mean).  Thank You so much for that.

The Santa Fe is awesome.  One
of the sturdiest easels I have ever worked on.  I got an amazing deal
on it.  Brand new in the box for $515.00.  I had a deep scratch on one
of the panels.  The delivery truck damaged it while delivering it to
art store.  I bought it, got some wood filler. Sanded it down.
Re-stained it. And voila.  :)  When you are ready to get it.  Just do
some research.  I have seen them as cheap as $800.  Hope that helps.
