For my day job I'm the Art Director at a television station in Las Vegas. It's great to get paid to do something I would be doing anyway...After my wife & kids go to bed at night I paint - often into the wee hours.

Recently my subject matter has been masks. I have a large collection of masks and decided to start creating "portraits" of them.

Come see more of my work at www.donmichaeljr.com and while you're there stop by my blog at www.donmichaeljr.com/blog.

Painting, Reading, attending Concerts, visiting Art Museums and Galleries.

Re my id photo--only the eyeball has fallen onto the tabletop.  It's actually a large, very thick magnifier--in olden days, it was placed in front of TVs.  I found it in an antique shop and couldn't wait to put the digital camera on sefl-timer and run behind the glass.  I cloned the eyeball onto the tabletop in Corel.  Believe it or not--none of my friends or neighbors are anxious to pose for me.

Thanks for the comments, Don.  Tragedy/comedy are so close.  "Uncle Red" could have been named, "Holy*&%#, My Face is Falling."  There is alway a point where sad or funny; I cry at sad.  An artist from WV bought Uncle Red and Mystic Woman.

I just looked at your gallery; loved "Survived the Season." I live in hunting country and when I see deer in the backs of trucks; I take an alternate route.  There is a deer skull in one of my paintings; I found it at a thrift store and thought it should be honored.  And I noted that you quoted Shrek in your blog--one of my recent favorite movies.

Keep painting.

Don, your masks are wonderfully rendered, and clearly show varying personalities. I appreciate your notice of my painting. It is mylatest. I took it off because it looked faded compared to the real painting, but don't think the second try looks much different. Hope it isn't really 'wicked', though when painting plein air I tend to trespass! nancy

Hello there,

I think this was the first picture I ever put up of myself.  It sort of looks like I'm giving ya the finger! LOL! I just keep changing my picture for the fun of it. Karen

hello!

"Come to my Window" is someting I designed from a photograph I took of a broken window that was very colorful just as it was photographed, but, it needed something extra to punch it up and add some mystic this window...so, I played around in photoshop with it.  Even, though I plunked in my face several times...I knew that I would have to wipe that smile off my face to make it a worthy painting.  Just didn't find the time to paint it yet...so, I just posted it as a photograph.

One of these days, I'll paint it up.  Karen.

Hello,

Thanks for the nice comment on, "Come To My Window."  I have to confess, it is a photograph I took and not a painting.  I was going to make a painting out of it..but...with my lack of time..I decided just to post the photograph instead.  Karen

Hi Don in Vegas. I love your own use of color and your mask subject matter has infinite possibilities. Are you showing your work anywhere in Las Vegas? Are you in a gallery yet? How has artscuttlebutt helped you in your work? I'm starting out with this exposure and am not yet sure where it will lead me. I like viewing the artwork, which changes every hour and minute! Take care,  -Kathy

Don--

Thanks so much for your wonderful and thoughtful comments on Mandarin Duck.  I wanted it to dance--ducks seem to be the kind of birds to do just that in a blur of abstraction :o).
