Just dropped by to see your page and gallery. I'm so impressed at all you do! Thanks for your happy remarks on my painting, "Plein d'envie". I've left the story there for you to read. Thanks for asking.

Thank you. Yes, my Dad was done with a Rapidograph, 3x0 and 2x0 sizes. It is about 15 x 22! Lots of patience and CD-listening on that one. He teared up a bit when I presented it to him. Caught him completely by surprise.

Glad you like it!

OMG! I'm cracking up! I coulda sworn your friends request (or something) stated you were 108! I naturally assumed you were just making a "what's age gotta do with it" joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Sorry 'bout that!

You look good for a 108 year old! I didn't know that about uber-cool Irving. Hmmmm. Used to be a public school teacher... I may have to give him (another) call ;-)

I have one thing to add to my mo-advice. Wedi board does have a drawback, and that is you can't put screws through it (but its light weight usually makes screws unnecessary). I just posted a photo of a giant heart (I'm going to mosaic) I cut out of wedi at www.flickr.com/photos/sucra88 if you want to look at the stuff.

Rockstar!.. lol

K! It's very, very cold! I haven't felt like being outside or even walking to the factory. I'm hibernating in my lil school house. Actually I'm stripping.... the floors! I'm stripping the floors. Been working on it slowly now for a couple weeks. Today I was using the belt sander to get close to the wall. I got a little too close to the blanket I was using as a curtain to keep dust out of the closet. That sander gobbled that blanket up like a tornado. OMG! It's wedged in there so tight. JAMMED! Ug. lol. I've pulled and pulled. It's not coming apart!. The darn thing is held together with hexagon screw heads which I have but not ones with a 2 inch extensions which I'll need for two of the screws.  I'm pulling the plug. It's a gonner. EEG is flat-lined. I'm going to the Depot.  Ug. Did I mention it's cold out there! lol..the things we do....sigh..

Hi! I never quite know whether to post a reply over there on my page, or come over here and post! Anyway, here's what you said on my page:

Hi Susan! Thank you so much for your encouragement.  Of course I have questions for you.  I am starting to do this slowly, buying up old bathroom tiles, coffee mugs and plates.  I want to mosaic (is that a verb?) the splashguard behind my sink and the wall behind my stove.  I'm worried about the actual weight of this sucker when it's all said and done, since the one behind my stove will probably be 4'x3'. What would be a fairly lightweight backing that could hold such a piece?  Thanks for your help and advice.  -M

So, here's the answer: Do you want to apply the tile directly to the wall? If so, then what is your wall made of?

If not (I did Sunsplash--photo in my gallery on backerboard, and THEN installed the backerboard to the wall. Makes for easier work, and I didn't have to stand in my client's kitchen for days on end. They appreciated that. ;-)), then you can apply your tiles to traditional backerboard like Hardibacker (any Home Depot/Lowe's has it), but it is quite heavy and that's a concern of yours? (The weight can be an issue, but if you screw the panels in as well as thinset/mortar adhere it, that's a pretty strong bond--the Sunsplash panels proably weighed in at 25 lbs each and I used thinset plus hardibacker screws into the studs).

There is a great backer board that is lightweight, moisture resistant, but is spendy at about 3 times the cost of hardi. It's also easy to cut (utility knife! YAY!). It is called Wediboard (pronounce wee-dee) and it's about $30. for a 3x5 sheet. It is worth the money, in my estimation. Kind of hard to locate, but if you go to Wedi's site, they have a distributor locator. If nothing comes up, then I know several online mosaic supplies that sell it. Let me know if you need their names.

Ooh, this is kinda fun being the resident mo-expert! My email is sucra88@hotmail.com if you'd rather write me directly!
