Hi--Beautiful painting, Promise of the Light.

I took your suggestion and posted some photos of sculpture, along with a blog explaining the switch to painting.

Hi David, I printed out some of my pastels in grey scale, and could really see how they were lacking in darks, as you pointed out. The only problem with this method is that the picture's finished, and correcting it at this point would be difficult. I'll have to get the grey card you mentioned. I've also heard that it helps to view your work in progress through red plastic or rubylith. I've got to get cracking on solving this problem... thanks for your help.

Thanks, David, for the friend request.  You're definitely approved.

I considered posting a few photos of sculptures but have not done so.  I sold most of them (and wish I had them all back).  All I have left from that period are 8x10 glossy b&w photos.  It was pre-digital time and I haven't scanned them into Picasa.

I'm hesitant to put them alongside my paintings.  When I began sculpting, people said "Oh, I liked your paintings."  Now that I'm painting I've heard "Oh, I really liked your sculpture."

Hi David, thanks for the feedback. You're so right, I know I have value problems with color. For years I only worked in B&W, never even had an interest in color, so it's fairly new to me. Pastels are great for learning color theory because you can layer them and watch color develop before your eyes. However, value is another matter. I do charcoal studies often before starting a color piece, but it doesn't really seem to help. If you see a certain area of a particular piece of mine that's value challenged, please point it out. I appreciate the help.

David, Thank you for the nice comments on my pastel painting. I really like your still lifes. They have a nice timeless feel to them.

Hi David, I took an extension class with a professor from my alma mater recently, and he said critique time is a nightmare. He's unable to get any students to say anything even remotely critical. He was tearining his hair out because he couldn't convince them that it would actually help others improve.

Having grown up in the 70s (the era of National Lampoon and the birth of Saturday Night Live), it's hard for me to buy into political correctness. In fact, I despise it. I think it's the death of creativity.

Just had to vent.

Thanks for listening,

Tracy

Hiya, David! Thanks for friending me, and your interest in the Mermaid work! I'm probably not going to start on it until after Thanksgiving, going to see friends for dinner, too many conflicting thoughts! I'm a great cook also, and the 2 "mediums" (painting and cooking) are conflicting!  But, I will post, as I said as the work comes along! And give what I find in my experimentation, to the Community! Wish me luck! Jeanette

Hi David,

Your work is breathtaking.  I especially like 'last light'.
