Painting Wins National Competition
DATE: 04/14/2008 21:24:39 / MOOD: other

My painting Warrior was just awarded First Place in a nationwide competition.  Warrior is in my Gallery section; it's the one of the soldier in the wheelchair.  The competition was for Iraq memorial art and was sponsored by Art Cries Out.  You can see more at their web site, www.artcriesout.com.  To say that I'm excited is an understatement ... I'm bouncing off the walls!

More Figure Sketches
DATE: 04/08/2008 22:04:12 / MOOD: other

I just posted a couple of new figure sketches.  These were drawn from life, very loosely, in pen.  Later I hit them with several layers of watercolors.  Lots of fun to do - very different from my "serious" paintings!

Art Cries Out
DATE: 04/03/2008 09:30:52 / MOOD: other

If you've browsed my gallery, you know that I've been creating art about the Iraq war.  Last week I found an online site dedicated to socially-conscious art.  It's called Art Cries Out at www.artcriesout.com.  Subjects range from the war to Hurricane Katrina and beyond.  I entered their Iraq War Memorial competition and right now am one of three finalists.  Whatever the outcome, it's great to have an online site that's focused on works of this nature.  It's hard to get these artworks seen, and I've even seen writers and critics complaining that "artists aren't engaged in the Iraq war."  (My response to them is YOU'RE NOT LOOKING!)  Anyway, if you're interested in this kind of work, go take a look at Art Cries Out.

Two New Paintings
DATE: 03/13/2008 18:42:02 / MOOD: other

This week I finished two new paintings and just posted them in my gallery.  Both are part of my series of paintings about war.  Rather than depict scenes based on my own experience, this time I got to wondering, what would it be like if our country had the level of violence that Iraq, Bosnia, and so many other countries have had?  Well, for one, our business leaders would craft their marketing strategies around it.  So here are a couple of things you might see in a magazine or in the postcard rack.  More such paintings are in development.  Let me know what you think!

I just added a couple more figure drawings from my life sessions.  One of them started as a charcoal drawing, but later I went back and added some pastel.  What do you think?

Two Paintings
DATE: 02/26/2008 19:11:53 / MOOD: other

I just uploaded two paintings to my gallery.  They were completed three years ago, and both have been exhibited in shows around the southeast.  Just a little political commentary on my part ...

New Oil Paintings
DATE: 02/18/2008 10:09:46 / MOOD: other

I just posted two new oil paintings.  One is titled "Veteran" and the other "Flag Waver" ... I think the titles are self-explanatory.  I painted both as part of my "Meditation on War" series.  You can see the whole series at my web site, www.skiprohde.com.  Actually, I haven't decided whether "Flag Waver" should be in the "Meditation on War" series or in the political satire "Bush League" series ... what do you think?

Figure Sketches

I just uploaded a couple of watercolor sketches from my weekly life drawing session.  These were quickly sketched with pen and ink, then I went back in later with watercolor, just playing around to see what happened.  Lots of fun.  I'll upload more over the next few days.  Let me know what you think.
