First I'd like to say, I'm glad to be back in the United States of America !There's no place like home. My family and I had lived in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from August of 2000, until August 2007. We were missionaries there, it was a great experience ! As an artist it was also very beneficial, St. Petersburg is the art "meca" of north east Europe. There are thousands of artist in St. Pete. not to mention the world famous Hermitage, which had free entrance the first Thursday of the month. There were dozens of artist on Nevsky Prospect at an out door art fair selling some really great works of art. There were galleries and some really good art supply stores everywhere, in the center of the city. One of my favorite places was the Russia National Museum. It had only works by Russian artist. The works by Repin, and others were just unbelievable, because of the size. My guess would be 12 feet tall and 20 feet long, with huge frames that must have weighed a ton ! Well, enough about Life in St. Pete. I drew my first commissioned portrait in 1972, at age 13. I had my first one-man art show at the Briggs Lawrence County Library, at age 15. Then February 7, 1976 I won the Scholastic Art Gold Key Award in oil painting. Boy, that was a long time ago. I worked 21 years in the graphic arts industry, and then 10 years as a missionary, now I've resigned from the mission agency, and am a full-time painter. I painted through the years and taught private art classes. I think I've reached a new level in my painting, but I think I could draw better when I was a student years ago. Although I stated that I am a portrait painter, I enjoy painting landscapes and sometimes wildlife. I would like to go back to St. Petersburg someday just to paint, or even take a small group of artist for a workshop, that would be great ! I'm glad I found Art Calendar magazine,
Thank You !

Not to worry you have been busy. Now you can dip in that oil paint & get a lot of new paintings done.

Happy Painting,
Linda

Ken, Thanks for your kind comment about my work.  I lived in Lapeenranta, Finland for 5 months.  I think you're the first American I've met that's been in Lapeenranta.  It was a great place and I loved the people.  Finns are more reserved than Americans but once you get to know them, they are some of the warmest people I've ever met.  Oh, I just noticed your winter painting... is that new?

Wow! St. Petersburg, Russia.  I'll bet you have some great stories to tell about your experience there.  I was a missionary in Finland and spent 5 months in a little town next to the Russian border.  Most of the people I knew worked in Russia.  It's a strong a proud culture... strong people.  I really enjoy your work and can see a depth of expression in it.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

Ken, thanks for your kind words. I put a Bible verse on some paintings, if the painting seems to illustrate a truth from scripture. The Bible says "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Word will never pass away". Its really the only constant, the only absolute in this life.

As far as painting goes, composition, etc.- a painter friend of mine describes it like this: drawing, composition, values, color, edges, etc. are like spinning plates...if you spend to much time on any one plate, another plate will stop spinning and fall. I think there is a little truth in there.

God bless,

 sm

Ken, your work is great! Sounds like Russia would be a great place to drag an easel and do some plein air painting. I would also love to paint in Israel...and about 50 other places

Hope your mission work went well the 10 years you were there. My brother is a missionary down in Brazil. He always has an interesting story to tell.

May God bless the work of your hands.

Hi Ken, I understand slow - I have the same problem; I don't think we are being singled out as much as we are being guided. I Gave a talk on "Rembrandt, his life and faith" yesterday to the Links group at our golf club. He is an interesting guy. I was drawn to him through his landscape sketches and his ability to communicate the Gospel with his art. He is still proclaiming after being with the Lord for over 400 years. Amazing! Best wishes and keep on keepen on! -  Walt
