unusual materials

Thought it would be fun to share our quirky materials. I have been using a lot of house paint. I go to the local home improvement store, and buy gallons of "oops" paint. That is paint that the paint guy mixed wrong, or the customer never picked up.

I have found latex house paint to be compatable with standard acrylics. And it works great for drips and quick inexpensive coverage.

So, do you use anything interesting?

I think the strangest thing I've used is wall compound. I applied it to masonite and then gave it about 5 coats of acrylic gesso. I really liked it, because it didn't allow me to get caught up on details, just on the "big picture". I also use tissue paper and rice paper to cover my surface and give it a lot of texture, but I guess that's not so weird.

It may not be unusual but I use wet newspaper to get a different type of surface and then I covere it with Gesso.  I also have been using cheap dollar spray paint to get certain effects.  I uste to do graffitti as a kid so it comes easy to manipulate the medium.

I use wall spackle for texture in my paintings, all the rocks in my landscape paintings are made with spackle then i paint over them. In my most recent painting "spring promises" i used spackle for the tree trunks. The only reason i started using it though was because i'm still learning to paint and i couldn't figure out how to paint rocks and make them look like rocks, lol. I also use house paint, much cheaper than acrylic and works well with them as you said.
