Publish a Book Yourself

A few years ago, I used apple.com to design and print a book of my photographs. I used one of the templates they offered to design the book and uploaded jpg files of the photos. When the package arrived, I was thrilled to see the beautiful packaging and strong, black cloth hard cover. When I saw the quality of the photos, however, I was horrified. The images were grainy and looked bitmapped. I returned them and they sent me another round. The second group was just barely acceptable. The books cost around $90 each for about 44 pages.

Last summer we took a once-in-a-lifetime family trip to Alaska. Needless to say, I couldn’t stop photographing. As a way to remember the trip, I created a book from my images and my journal, and gave it to my husband and son for Christmas. This time, I used lulu.com. I uploaded a high res pdf of a book I’d designed myself using InDesign. The books were something like $17.50 each and 90 pages long all in full color. The quality of the printing left something to be desired—the bleed wasn’t always right, images didn’t look fully saturated and alive—but the price was affordable.

Does anyone know of a quality bookmaking service?

Hi Molly

I haven't used them but the buzz around is a site called http://www.blurb.com for creating your own books.   I believe it was featured on Oprah or one of the talk shows, but I think it was  Oprah.   Hope this helps.
