Artist and sculptor Lisa Beckner is a type of 'kitchen scientist' that
crafts recipes from non-traditional, natural ingredients, measured and
mixed to create her 3-dimensional, small-scale figures. Beckner
combines corn meal, starch and sugars to create her medium, to which
she adds pigment for colorful and textural effects. She uses the
dough-like 'batter' to cover wire and burlap frames shaped into
small-scaled clothing that include details that a fashion designer
might include in a new garment. The pieces are baked like cakes to
create capricious works of art. They are simple examinations of the
human form – and lack thereof – as each is missing any real identity
beneath the hollow forms.
