Born in N. Kingstown, RI in 1970, under the name, Antony Galbraith, DoAn found artistic expression early in life. As a child he was fascinated by birds, animals, and the natural world— spending hours at a time drawing and painting what he observed. He struggled over the years with the challenge of finding a way to adequately communicate the beauty of nature through his art without simply copying it. Unable to find a satisfying answer, he turned his attention to writing and the study and practice of Buddhism.
The turning point for him came in 2002, when he took Buddhist precepts and was given the dharma name DoAn, which means “Way of Peace”. He spent two and half years training as a Buddhist monk and learning traditional Asian brush painting and calligraphy. It was a result of his study and practice of Buddhism that he was able to find his artistic direction--it is for that reason he signs his work under his Buddhist name DoAn.
DoAn’s work is influenced by both Western and Eastern artistic traditions. He often combines new materials and techniques with the traditional, to create work that exists in the interstices of the West and East. Much of his art compares different cultures, combines mythologies, folklores, and the natural world to create paintings in abstract and expressionist styles. Meditation is also an important element in his work, with many pieces completed only after periods of sitting meditation.
Through the marriage of the glazing and attention to texture and detail of Western art traditions to the bold brush strokes and calligraphic lines of Asian art customs, DoAn strives to open minds, break down barriers, and allow viewers to experience work that crosses boundaries and exists in the in-betweeness of what is known.

Yeah, ph Martin inks act almost like dyes.  They are great for airbrush and their color is spectacular.  They are pretty unforgiving if you are used to guoache, though.  Once that color is down, you are done, whether you like it or not.

They are fun to paint with, though, almost like coloring.  Have fun with them and post what ever you do.  I love you way with color and would really like to see it.

Hi Tony, I don't know how you found me on this site but am glad you did! I am particularly drawn to the yellow painting you have posted. Do you know if there's a way to post the size and media used?  Jackie

I really enjoy the spiral images, I did a series related to genesis a few years ago, which I never finished but they have a similar emotional feel I think. I have always liked John, where he talks about the world being created from the Word, it is a very powerful image for me (a book addict). I think I'll try to find some images and post them!
