We (my wife and I) have been art teachers for almost 30 years, with successful (in acclaim, not $) art making careers, and we are plotting a course to leave our teaching jobs and live a more creative life around art making.(kids are out of the house and almost on their own) We are not at official retirement age-so it isn't that kind of deal (we really don't believe in retirement anyway). We are just ready to make a change and more a commitment to art making. But is it possible in your mid-50's? I am sure there are others in our situation and others that have made the leap. Would love to create a dialogue about the issues involved.

Getting seen or sold is going to cost you money. Your mission is to navigate the many hazards and find the fruitful markets. Talent, skill and discipline  will keep your art on track.  Marketing is a  wild west of it's own.  What works for  one artist can be sure disaster for another.  You need to muster your powers of critical thinking to dodge  the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. That said you will meet lots of other art oriented folks and have a fascinating adventure. Enjoy the ride. Keep your sense of humor and you will be fine.

I too would like to take that leap. That's why I starting getting stuff on several web sites, and starting my own. Also been in some competitions, and would like to do some shows/festival/fair type things. Testing the waters I guess. Hoping to start getting commissions for pet portraits and whatever else anyone wants. I am willing to try about anything.

You know, when you put together a compilation of work; your age, height, good looks, GPA or resume has no impact on whether or not somebody likes your stuff.  The best part about being an artist is that if enough folks like your stuff, you can be a star at any time and any place.  Go for it.  I'll be following along the same route as soon as I can.
