The hard glare of publicity and the ravages of the cult of personality in our society
wrecks many artists. They have to be strong and their art has to be strong and vital to survive. The great process of mass popularity and mass culture has a vicious tendency to demean art. When you appeal
to the mass you usually appeal to the least common denominator. It is a tribute to the artist who does not do this and never has. They are living proof that quality has a place in mass society. And in some mystical way, perhaps, their success with quality is a reaffirmation of the basic,
positive good of life itself.

I used to feel the pressure of the competition within the art community to "succeed." That feeling passed a long time ago. My true passion is to paint that which comes from my unique viewpoint because that's all I can offer. I've gained enough technical skill to match most other artists, so the only original thing I have left is my point of view which no one else can precisely duplicate. Real innovation rarely occurs, but individuality is omnipresent and should be attended to by more artists. There are too many folks out there trying to paint like someone else, turning into clones. This is neither an honest approach nor rewarding to the artist. In my opinion, the best thing we can do for ourselves as artists is to just "be ourselves." Painting should be a pleasure as well as work. - Kathy

Thank you for your opinion. I know right now I need it. However, about paying the bills, I agree, at least in part, with Mjblanco; we all know the feeling, but your words enter the heart, and keeps us going. Again, we need each other . . . and we need the masses, at least a few of them (smile); the ones that will learn from us, and grow. Well, that is my opinion.

I just finished paying my bills.  I could stand a little mass appeal, if they bought some of my stuff so i could buy supplies and appeal a little more to the masses.    Really, it's late and I'm just tired and feeling very punchy.
