Artist On Parole

"ART ISN'T A REAL JOB!"  At least according to the Parole Department. I must have an Employer, a Time Card, a Paystub. Now that's a real job. Okay. Alright. I went and got a job. A "real" one.  In retail!   So I draw & paint by day...and sell office supplies by night. Don't be jealous, this glamourous life isn't for everyone.

I have learned a great deal in these two months of freedom. 1. Everything is expensive, but everything worth keeping is free.  2. People are still good, for the most part.  3. Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves sad and miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same.  And 4. Women are still beautiful. Wow, I forgot how beautiful. The work I have posted so far was all done Inside. I worked mainly from magazines and photos, sometimes from memories, taking a striking pose or gorgeous face and creating a scene, hopefully a story around them. I wanted to draw what I missed most, but not an idealized pin-up version of perfection.  I wanted to show the strengths, the weaknesses, that all of us share regardless of gender.  Plus, drawing dudes is boring! I was surrounded by dudes inside those horrible places--why would I want to draw them?

Parole for an artist is pretty easy. Don't use. Don't break the law. Get (and keep) a real job. And don't hang out with losers.  Having a criminal record is a setback only if you allow it to be.  The only disability is a bad attitude. We're going to have our successes, and and we're going to have our defeats. That's our life.  We're Artists.  But remember, defeat isn't bitter unless you swallow it.

THANK YOU to all of you who commented on my earlier works. Hopefully you will see some growth as I post more recent stuff.  You guys are awesome!  KEEP CREATING!!!

I'm wondering how the parole department handles other parolees who are self-employed and/or own their own business. Surely, if you have a state resale license and demonstrable income, there must be wiggle room.

Oh, wait. It's the goverment. They don't make sense.
