I just signed up for oil painting classes. I haven't held a brush since kindergarten water colors so I'm feeling way out of control, but I would like to try, I think. I have been talking about this for about a year now and my wife finally told me to put up or shut up. I'll let you know how it goes.

Advice? Anyone?

Have fun! I've used oils for so many years I can't remember starting and it's still my favorite medium. There are so many approaches and techniques so be sure to experiment. Try lots of different color palettes (primary, split primary, impressionistic--man I love this stuff!), supports, brushes...   Your wife has no idea what she may have started.    One last suggestion:  Try looking at Gamblin Paint Company's website  (www.gamblincolors.com) for some (lots) of info on the "nuts and bolts" of building oils paintings. I think it could be really helpful to someone just beginning to enjoy oils.  Keep us all posted on your progress!  -W

Go for it.  I recently decided to learn to play the guitar, something I have always wanted to do.  After 7 months I am finally doing something that almost resembles music.  At our age we have to keep the synapses synapsing.
