Can't All Be Fab

Hey Painters,

Friday night's opening of the Hidden Gallery was, in my opinion, a bust. The only people who came were the artists and their friends, no one with enough $$$ to buy art. Three of my pieces weren't priced. I gave the woman who runs the gallery printed stickers with name, size, artist and price, but she said she wanted these cool clear labels. She got them, but wrote the info by hand, and not great handwriting.

She separated my seaweed into three places, including a tiny room off the bathroom with one wall of black and white photography, a statue of a gold bull on a tall pedistal, and a wall of my work.

Worse than that is she hung five seaweed pieces surrounded by irridescent fish and starfish and an octopus. When are people going to learn that seaweed is my medium, not my theme. I guess I must sound pretty angry, and I guess I am.

I will sit down with her and tell her that I want my work hung as a body of work, not scattered here and there, and it is not fish, octopus, crab themed, and doesn't belong with those ceramic wall hangings.

There were three sales, two suncatchers made of glass and shells, and a carved walrus for $125.

I may remove my work from the gallery and use it in online auctions, etc.

I always have such wild expectations, and sometimes they are met, like the opening of the Left Bank Gallery. I must learn to curb it, as every opening will not be the same.

I'm going to work on the portrait of my neighbor now.

Live in the light,

Lisabeth

Yes, marketing is just as important as creating.  It's hard to find time for even one of those.  So far, I haven't dealt with anyone else hanging my stuff and deciding how to present it.  But I agree that it shows better in groupings.  That is kind of strange that your pieces were scattered about.  I guess you need to be there to collaborate on the installation.

I can feel your frustrations Lisabeth, sincerely.

I used to be a part of a gallery that used to be a bit like that. It's becoming more and more clear to me that so much of our existence as creatives needs to be put into learning how to market, present and sell our work, not only creating it.

Our ability to be able to share that vision with people who want to present your work seems pivotable too. So often we presume that people will 'get it' or hope for better what we are doing marketingwise.... but sadly that is much too often less than the case.

I agree, your art is a lot more than just something cutesy and sea creature themed.

Perhaps you could write an artist statement for viewers and presenters to understand that more? (just one idea)....

or

Perhaps you need to get a website together that projects your thoughts and feelings around your art to complete it's story.

Perhaps design a card that you can print and put at the bottom of each painting to give a full meaning/full story/full explanation of what's going on?

I really don't know.... but as I said. I feel the frustration when you know someone that's showing you just doesn't get what you are trying to say or project.

Hope that all else is well.
Adam x
