My involvement in art is growing with time. For many years, I worked on art projects in different media only during summers and occasional evenings to fit in with my career in education.

Since 2000, I’ve been able to devote more time to my artwork, and it's taken center stage in my life. I'm working only in colored pencil right now doing mostly figurative and landscape pieces. It's a medium that suits my style of representational art and lets me to use my favorite art tool—a pencil. I create color in my work by putting down one layer of pencil over another so the mixing of colors is done on the paper, not on a palette.

The artistic process begins for me when I notice something that moves me with its humor or poetry or even quirkiness. If I’m lucky, I can capture the moment in a photo and create a painting from it so I can continue enjoying it and share it with others. I like bright, bold colors to convey the energy I experience. Often I am attracted to people in a particular setting that suggests a narrative, but a bowl of beans or a stunning sunset can also move me.

Your gallery is a lot of fun! I love the way you captured the soda shop. The bunny hop is my favorite. There again the way you captured the expressions of happiness on the faces. AWESOME!

Thanks for the compliment on my painting.

You and KLongs do amazing stuff with colored pencil! I bet some folks would say "what is so hard about using colored pencil?", but I've tried them and I get messy results. I'm curious...I've experimented with them before and I just couldn't get the clean look you both get even though to me it looks like you layer the colors just like paint. Outside of the obvious talent you have in using them, is there a certain brand that works better than others? Does the paper or board you put it on make a big difference? Do you work in very thin layers and build up the density?

You have a great gallery - the neighborhood scenes are fantastic!

Awesome, and congrats on the past accepted work!  I have had 2 works in, but unfortunately not in succession.  In 2006 I did not enter b/c of wedding planning, the wedding, and honeymoon etc.  Hopefully we'll both get in this year, and then the next and so on.  I just finished up submitting my pieces on the Cafe website.  I though it was a fairly easy process.  I'll upload my submissions on this site soon.  Take care, keep in touch,

Kevin
