Gee, I'm drawing a blank! Just like when I start a painting or drawing. Took an art class in 8th grade, enjoyed it, but sports and girls took over. Did not pick up a pencil again until I retired in 2004. Am essentially self-taught, although I have taken a few workshops here and there...David Taylor, Roberta Carter Clark, Mary Whyte....all watercolorists. Never tried oil or pastel, but maybe some day. Love to paint outdoors, but I suck at it. Most of my friends are artists and I enjoy being around them and attending exhibits etc. My wife is even more critical than I am, but she is always right, especially when it comes to my portrait work. If something is out of whack, she will see it. Love to ride my motorcycle to places to paint or photograph...a great sense of freedom, although I have to whack a few bugs every now and then. Hope to have a one-man show in 2009. Anyone who reads this has my utmost respect....you are an artist no matter what and I know you are always trying your best to get better.

baloney sandwiches and hotdogs, my artist friends, eary morning when the sun rises, Dunkin Donuts coffee, a perfect brushstroke, en plein air painting, my family, quiet time, motorcycling, the challenge of making a good painting, wide open spaces, cruising, giving away paintings to friends (no money in that, but what the hey!). Favorite artists are Charles Reid, Mel Stabin, Vermeer, David Taylor.

broccoli, New Jersey, unable to get a consistent result, bugs while painting outdoors, achey feet, swimming, having no formal art training, repeating the same mistakes and expecting a different result, cutting the lawn.

watercolor painting, life drawing, motorcycle riding to find places to paint or photograph, reading, cowboy action shooting, attending exhibits,

Wow! first, beautiful work! You are very gifted. Secondly, I used to work in circulation doing those wretched fliers for the carriers! Like if you get 35 orders you can win this handy dandy tool set. When were you a carrier? I got absorbed into promotion in 1990 but spent the bulk of my time there - 35 years - in circulation. small world. take care and thanks.

Hi John,

Yes please use shivering anyway you wish and I would love to see your progress. And the story of your sisters horse is amazing what a nice surprise for her giving the drawing to her. Your drawings are wonderful. Your can feel the emotion of the story you really give wonderful energy to them. Did you try to make a horse in watercolor? Give it a try and would love to see it.

Warmest wishes

Carey

Thanks for the comments on my cycling painting. Your work is great. To be able to work in that much detail on figurative pieces with watercolors is beyond my skill set.

John, thanks for your comment. Talking horses would sure add another dimension to farming, to be sure.

You have some great watercolors in your gallery. Great portraits. Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks John,Well let's just say I'm concentrating something else for the time being. I do love doing the hats. But I have to do some landscapes for a doctors office so that is taking my time now.

Keep up the good work.

Best, Alston

Thanks John,

I have fooled around with Watercolor.  My sister is the Watercolorist in the family.  I usually paint with acrylics.  I should try doing birds.  Your protraits are amazing as are all your paintings.

Have fun,

Barbara
