About Me: I'm in a transition period, I suppose...
I've made images for as long as I can remember, and I've always wanted to translate the world I see around me (the space, the atmosphere, the color, the light) into images. When I lived in Taos, I would go out my front door, stare across the mesa, and want desperately to make an image as sensorially impressive as the vast space I saw before me.
I went through art school where my studies were highly experimental and highly conceptual. Non-traditional, one could say. So I learned how to make, and for a long time have made, process-oriented abstractions like the encaustics on my website at phippsart.com .
But lately I've wanted to step far back from these abstract images and see if and how they might crystallize into something more representational. So the images here and on my blog, A Visual Journey , are these. I'm in the process of learning how to let a painting live a dual life as both a beautiful, sensuous riot of color and texture and line and shape, and also an impression of a particular place.
Thanks for stopping by.
