Sometimes I like going to YouTube and doing a "stream-of-conscious" progression while I paint. I love music in general-

I have recently moved from Ohio to New Mexico and started painting (semi full-time). The high desert (about 20 miles east of Albuquerque) is amazing. There is soo much history, culture and just raw beauty here- everyday feels like an adventure.

I am a graduate(BFA) of CCAD in Columbus. I have been an Art Director in various Ad Agencies for the past 13 years, and have recently rediscovered something I think I had lost :)

Every drive with the sunroof open

Cold gray gloom

I like to run, I like to draw editorial cartoons about hockey, while watching hockey. I really like exploring New Mexico!

Tom, thanks for your kind comment about the boots. I really enjoyed painting that one. Found the boots in an old museum on the Paluxy River near Glen Rose, TX.

As I mentioned before, I love your work, the looseness and the clarity. You are in a great place to paint. Went through there once... the lighting is awesome. Look forward to seeing more.

Good eye, Tom. Yes, there are two masks in "To Know Me". I talk briefly about my thinking processes on this one in my blog http://www.donmichaeljr.com/blog/2008/11/14/layers/. And, yes the bottom mask is the same as the one in "The Inevitable Adventure". I  just chose to leave out the dots in "...Adventure". Several of my masks have made it into multiple paintings - one of them 6 times now. My favorites have been the masks with hair. I love that I can create a sense of motion with the hang or fall of the hair. Plus, I'm a bit of a hippy...in reality and at heart...  Thanks for your observations. They are always appreciated.   -Don

Tom, working at Kreber is always a good excuse to get a cat. I worked as an art director for Kreber North Carolina for 11 years. Didn't get to visit the C-bus facility, but I have worked on jobs with Gary Greene, Shane Marks and of course I know Jim K. Frank K. and Jack K. He has been down here in NC for about 3 years. Great group to work with. I've heard stories about the original Kreber building in the questionable neighborhood. Email anytime, we might have some good stories between us.

Happy painting as well, look forward to seeing more. -Doug

Hey Tom, Thanks for your comment on the Boys Club painting. It's all about the shadows. Just viewed your gallery and I am moved by your painting title and subject matter. Your brushstrokes look to be very loose, I love that.  Noticed that you've been an Art Director for various ad agencies in the Columbus area (me too, down here in NC).  Are you familiar with Kreber Graphics in Columbus?

 All the best, Douglas

Hi Tom, I usually have a number of paintings around in various stages; right now I have about 7-8 going, with two nearly complete, so I'll probably try to get another started in the next few days. Thank for your email and I'll try to compose something worthy in reply soon. Have a great weekend.

Hi Tom, I like the new paiintings you've posted...I'm guessing by the grain of the canvas they are small scale? Anyway, I sent you an email message, so check your spam mail if you can't find it. Have a great painting day!

Tom, I could ask you the same "do you sleep?" question. Yep, I'm up playing. Just finished my next one. I'll probably post it Tuesday sometime.

Thanks for thinking of me when you saw those masks in Albequerque. I'm always in the market - within reason. But, I also welcome snapshots, if you would be willing to share. The mask in my painting "Silence Gives Consent" came from a snapshot one of our Artscuttlebutt friends sent me after she'd seen it at a Renaissance Faire.

Well, now I am going to bed...   Later,   -Don

I didn't realize there were so many "mainstream" graphics/art directors conversing here. I owned a small graphic design firm and had to get out of it before it consumed me. You are in a great place to be an artist and I love your work! I have a daughter who lives in Santa Fe... it's lovely, but I have to re-adjust to the altitude every time I go out there. Is there a secret to it?

malkovich was brilliant, but then again, everyone was great in that movie. my only criticism is that it was a bit slow in the middle somewhere, but it definitely resolved itself. btw, having been art directing advertising and branding various companies for years, still consulting, i can really relate to rediscovering the "real" you through your art, which is what I think you mean in your statement above, yes?

cheers!
